Fake Daughter Is The Real Legend (Iris Sutton) novel Chapter 19

Chapter 19 No Time

Meanwhile, Chloe remained visibly unsettled.

She kept glancing toward the private room where Emma was resting.

Again.

And again.

And again.

The guilt was practically written across her face.

She never meant for this to happen.

How was she supposed to know Emma was allergic to mangoes?

Or that she’d just undergone surgery?

The kid hadn’t said anything.

She’d accepted the cake and eaten every bite.

Still…

The more Chloe thought about Ares Barclay discovering the truth, the more anxious she became.

Eventually, she made a decision.

Her parents needed to know first.

If Richard and Eleanor spoke on her behalf, perhaps things wouldn’t become too ugly.

“Mom. Dad.”

Her voice trembled slightly.

“I need to tell you something.”

Inside the private suite Henry had prepared, Emma slept peacefully.

The healthy color had fully returned to her cheeks.

After confirming she was stable, Ares finally allowed himself to relax.

Now it was time to deal with the aftermath.

Someone had fed Emma that cake.

Someone had nearly killed her.

After a long pause, Ares nodded.

Fic

His gaze shifted toward Chloe.

“Next time you attend an event…” His voice remained calm. “Bring your brain with you.”

Chloe’s face instantly burned with embarrassment.

Even then, she wasn’t willing to give up.

As they prepared to leave, she quickly pulled out her phone.

A WhatsApp QR code appeared on the screen.

“Mr. Barclay.” She smiled hopefully. “Why don’t we exchange contact information?”

She glanced toward Emma.

“If she ever gets bored, I can take her out.” Her smile brightened. “Consider it part of my apology. I love kids.”

The response she received was the sound of a door closing in her face.

Bang.

Chloe froze.

Julian sighed internally.

A spoiled heiress really was something else.

Couldn’t she tell she was overstaying her welcome?

The gala ended late.

By the time the Noir family returned home, everyone was exhausted.

After showers, they headed straight to bed.

Everyone except Iris.

She logged into her business account.

There was still the matter of Xavier’s failed deal with Barclay Holdings.

If she could negotiate directly with Ares, there might still be room for progress.

She sent a message.

And waited.

Nothing

An hour passed.

Still nothing.

Apparently Mr. Barclay was busy caring for his niece.

Eventually, Iris gave up and went to sleep.

The next morning, she checked her messages.

No response on the business account.

Not even a read receipt.

Had he stayed up all night too?

Annoyed, she switched back to her personal account.

The instant she logged in, her phone vibrated.

A message from Ares.

Sent the previous night.

[Thank you for saving Emma again. She wants to invite you to dinner.]

Iris stared at it.

Then stared at the unread message sitting in her business inbox.

So he ignored her work account…

But replied here?

Her already unpleasant morning mood worsened.

Running a hand through her hair, she typed two words.

[No time.]

At the Barclay Estate, Ares sat across from his grandfather.

Steam curled upward from freshly poured tea.

Ares had rolled up his sleeves and was calmly refilling the older man’s cup.

The atmosphere remained peaceful.

Until his grandfather spoke.

How’s the search for Dr. Zero going?”

Ares paused.

“A few leads.”

His answer was measured.

“But nothing substantial.”

The old man slammed his teacup onto the table.

The sharp crack echoed through the room.

“A few leads?” His eyebrows shot upward. “You’ve been looking for months!”

He glared.

“Are all those people working for you useless? It’s one doctor, not a ghost.”

Then his expression darkened.

“The Young family contacted me yesterday.”

Ares looked up.

His grandfather’s voice became unusually heavy.
