Chapter 20 Children Playing

The woman who had just rejected the richest man in the world was currently sitting inside an unremarkable fast-food restaurant.

Across from Iris sat a plainly dressed middle-aged woman.

The moment she returned from a business trip and heard what had happened, she’d insisted on seeing I immediately.

“I just got back and heard everything,” Vivian Hart said with concern. “How are your biological parents treating you, sweetheart?”

“I’m doing really well, Aunt Vivian,” Iris replied honestly.

Vivian was Vanessa Sutton’s younger sister.

Back when Vanessa and Samuel had been busy with work, Iris had often been left in her care.

Vivian had always treated her kindly.

“You silly girl.” Vivian sighed dramatically. “You don’t have to comfort me.”

She immediately transferred several pieces of meat from her own plate onto Iris’s.

“Eat more.”

Her eyes grew red.

“Your family’s struggling now. You probably haven’t had a proper meal in weeks.”

Honestly, Vivian couldn’t understand her sister at all.

How could someone raise a child for eighteen years and then cut ties so completely?

Especially a child as beautiful and well-behaved as Iris.

Iris looked at the growing pile of food and smiled helplessly.

She really wasn’t comforting her.

She genuinely was doing well.

Before leaving the house that morning. Eleanor had practically forced her to finish a breakfast of imported smoked salmon, fresh berries, and truffle omelets before allowing her out the door.

“The college entrance exams are only three months away.”

Vivian’s concern deepened.

“This whole identity-switch situation…” She hesitated. “It hasn’t affected your grades, has it?”

“No.” Iris took a sip of tea. “My parents are transferring me to a school closer to home”

Vian immediately assumed she meant a school in Ashford County.

Her heart nearly broke.

How could Samuel and Vanessa let that happen?

The educational resources there couldn’t possibly compare to a top academy.

The two continued chatting.

Neither noticed the group of students entering the restaurant.

Until someone suddenly stopped.

“Wait.”

A girl narrowed her eyes.

“Isn’t that your sister?”

Olivia looked toward the window.

The moment she spotted Iris, her good mood evaporated.

Again?

Why did she keep running into her everywhere?

Just seeing Iris reminded Olivia of the thirty thousand dollars she’d lost.

Her parents had argued because of it.

Her allowance had been reduced.

Then another realization struck.

The woman sitting across from Iris looked familiar.

Wasn’t that Aunt Vivian?

What were they doing together?

A thought immediately formed.

Was Iris trying to use Vivian to worm her way back into the Sutton family?

One of Olivia’s friends immediately brightened.

“Come on.” She grabbed Olivia’s arm. “Let’s help you get some payback.”

Olivia glanced around carefully.

NO Emma

No Ares.

No one capable of backing Iris up.

Perfect.

The group headed upstairs.

There were plenty of empty tables.

Yet somehow Olivia’s group chose the one directly beside Iris.

“I heard you’re transferring to a school in Ashford County.”

One girl laughed.

“That place is practically the middle of nowhere.”

“Your chances of getting into a good university are basically dead.”

Another girl smirked.

“Meanwhile Olivia ranked first in the entire class again.” She folded her arms. “If I were Mr. Sutton, I’d choose Olivia too.”

The girls were Olivia’s loyal followers.

Naturally, she didn’t need to say a word herself.

Instead, she sighed softly.

“Don’t say that.” Her voice was gentle. “No one can control their fate.”

She looked at Iris sympathetically.

“She’s already been through so much.”

Then she glanced at Vivian.

“Maybe she just wanted to see Aunt Vivian and ask her to convince Mom to forgive her.”

She paused.

“But, Iris…” Her expression turned troubled. “That won’t work.”

“Mom and Aunt Vivian aren’t very close.”

And Mom already told you to stop playing games and start living your own life.”

The teenagers immediately melted.

How could Olivia be so kind?

So forgiving?

Such an angel.

“You’re way too nice!” one girl complained.

“She used to bully you all the time.”

“And you’re still treating her kindly.”

The students couldn’t see through Olivia’s performance.

Vivian could.

She opened her mouth, ready to defend Iris.

Only for Iris to gently stop her.

“I’m done eating.” She stood. “Let’s go, Aunt Vivian.”

In Iris’s eyes, Olivia and her friends were just children playing make-believe.

They weren’t worth wasting energy on.

She still needed to stop by the hospital and check on Emma later.

Unfortunately, Olivia’s group wasn’t finished.

Several students stepped forward and blocked their path.

“Why the rush?” One of the boys grinned. “We ordered all this expensive food just for you.”

He gestured toward their table.

“You should finish it before you leave.”

Another laughed.

“After all, once you move to Ashford County, you probably won’t get to eat food this good again.”

Vivian looked at the mountain of food stacked across the table.
