Vanessa was still holding Noah’s phone when Iris’s question caught her completely off guard.

Startled, she dropped it.

The phone hit the floor with a sharp crack.

Noah immediately rushed over and picked it up.

“What are you talking about?”

Vanessa blurted out the response so loudly that it attracted another wave of curious onlookers.

Samuel quickly grabbed her arm.

“Iris, you can’t just throw around accusations like that.” He forced a smile. “Vivian

is our sister. What possible reason would we have to hurt her?”

Before Iris could reply, he hurriedly dragged Vanessa away.

Noah clutched his phone tightly.

Vivian had bought it for him when he was in seventh grade as a reward for finishing first in his class.

She had even promised to buy him an even better phone after his entrance exams.

And now…

Lowering his head, he typed a message on the screen.

“I’m sorry, Iris. I shouldn’t have lied to you.”

Iris looked at the fragile boy standing before her.

Without saying anything, she opened her arms and hugged him.

Noah was only a middle–school student. He had skipped a grade, but at the end of the day, he was still a child. The moment Iris hugged him, the emotional wall he’d

been holding up completely collapsed.

He buried his face against her shoulder and cried.

He wanted to scream:

What if my mom never wakes up?

But all that came out were broken, muffled sobs.

Iris simply held him quietly. She waited until he had cried himself out and finally calmed down before letting go.

“Let’s go upstairs.”

Inside the hospital room, Vivian lay silently in bed.

Her forehead, arm, and leg were wrapped in thick layers of bandages.

Noah signed: “The doctors said she’s out of danger, but there’s a high chance she may never wake up…”

Iris glanced at the monitors before taking Vivian’s wrist and checking her pulse.

The diagnosis matched what the doctors had said.

The head injury was serious.

The damage to her right arm was particularly severe.

Although the limb had been saved, she would likely never be able to perform heavy cooking tasks again.

Vivian was an excellent chef. She was also the head chef of her own restaurant. For someone like her, an injury of this magnitude was almost devastating.

“What exactly happened?” Iris asked. “When I called yesterday, everything seemed fine.”

The two sat on a bench outside the room.

Noah typed another message and handed over his phone.

“I don’t know exactly what happened. I was studying at home yesterday when Mom called to say she’d be late getting home.”

“She said there had been trouble at the restaurant and told me not to tell you.”

“Then later that night, the hospital called me.”

Iris nodded.

Standing up, she gently patted his shoulder.

“Focus on your exam. I’ll handle this.”

The moment she said those words, Noah visibly relaxed.

Having Iris there felt like having an anchor.

A source of stability.

Somehow, whenever she was around, he always felt like there wasn’t a problem in the world she couldn’t solve.

The first thing Iris did was arrange for Vivian to be transferred into a private room.

That way Noah could stay with her.

There was no way he could return home under these circumstances.

Meanwhile, Zane went back to the Hart family’s apartment and retrieved all of Noah’s study materials according to a list Noah provided.

In the attending physician’s office-

“Based on the injuries, this appears to be an accidental fall.” The doctor pointed to the scans. “The abrasions suggest she tumbled down a staircase. It also looks like a heavy object struck her hand.”

An accident.

Iris stared at the images in silence.

“The fact that she survived is already fortunate.” The physician sighed. “If she hadn’t arrived when she did, we might not have been able to save her.”

By the time he had arrived to perform surgery, the nurses had already cleaned the wounds.

He hadn’t seen her initial condition.

“If you want details about how she looked when she arrived, you’ll need to ask the nurses who were on duty.”

Iris headed toward the nurses‘ station to check the shift schedule.

As she approached, she overheard a nurse talking on the phone.

“The patient from last night was terrifying!” The nurse shuddered. “When she arrived, her hands and face were covered in blood. Her face was bright red–it looked awful.”

“I heard someone smashed a pot of stew over her head. The smell of broth mixed with blood was so awful I couldn’t eat stew for days.”

Iris stopped instantly.

She walked directly over.

The nurse hung up and nearly jumped when she found someone standing in front of her.

“Uh… ma’am? Can I help you?”

“The patient you were just talking about.” Iris’s voice was calm. “Can you tell me more? I’m family.”

“Oh.” The nurse immediately softened. “Actually, that’s perfect. You’ll need to fill out this form anyway.”

She handed over some paperwork.

“I don’t know everything. Your relative owns a restaurant, right?”

Iris nodded.

“She was brought in by several employees still wearing their work uniforms.”

The nurse sighed sympathetically.
