Noah leaned against the door for a long time before finally straightening up.
He walked into the kitchen, packed all the leftover rice into a lunch container, and left the apartment carrying it.
Kingsley Central Hospital.
Noah stopped a doctor and typed a question on his phone.
“Doctor, when will my mom wake up?”
The doctor shook his head.
“That’s difficult to say.”
“The patient suffered fractures to her right arm and right leg, multiple abrasions across her body, and a severe head injury. The fact that she survived at all is already a miracle…”
He couldn’t bring himself to say the rest.
It was too cruel for a child to hear.
Even if Vivian woke up, there was a high probability she would remain in a vegetative state.
Carrying the lunch container, Noah sat alone on a bench outside the hospital
room.
He lowered his head deeply.
His eyes burned.
It looked like his mom wouldn’t be able to eat today’s meal either.
Opening the container, he slowly ate the still–warm fried rice one bite at a time.
Halfway through, he finally couldn’t hold back his tears.
Before the accident, Vivian had repeatedly reminded him of one thing:

Starting over with a new family hadn’t been easy for her, and Vivian didn’t want their problems constantly dragging her back.
“Noah? What’s wrong, Noah?”
Two figures hurried down the hallway and sat beside him, one on each side.
They gently patted his back.
“Why are you eating something like this? How is that nutritious?”
Vanessa Sutton frowned at the fried rice in his hands.
“You’ve got exams coming up soon! Come on, let’s take you out for a proper meal.”
She reached for the lunch container, but Noah gripped it tightly and refused to let go.
“Listen to us, Noah. Go eat first.”
Samuel Sutton also tried to comfort him.
The couple wrapped their arms around him, acting as if he were their own son.
Nearby, a nurse sighed to a coworker.
“At least the poor kid still has family around. Otherwise he’d be completely alone…”
Noah closed the lunch container and signed:
Thank you, but no.
Vanessa stared blankly. “What does that mean?”
The nurse who had been about to praise them:
39
Were these people actually related to the child?

Left with no choice, Noah typed on his phone.
No thanks. I’ll stay here.
He had barely interacted with the Sutton family before.
Their sudden concern felt strange and made him uncomfortable.

“Don’t worry, Noah.” Samuel patted his shoulder. “At a time like this, you need to stay strong. Focus on your exams and don’t worry about anything else. If your mother doesn’t wake up, we’ll continue taking care of you.”
Hearing those words during such a difficult time warmed Noah’s heart. He was about to thank them when Vanessa continued speaking.
“But Noah, you may not know the situation our family is facing right now.”
“Our business has run into trouble, and money is tight.”
“Your mother promised to lend us money to help us get through it.” She sighed dramatically. “But now she’s unconscious and can’t talk to us, so…”
Vanessa grabbed Noah’s shoulders. Her voice trembled with forced emotion.
“Do you know where your mother keeps her money?”
Noah froze. Disbelief filled his face.
Seeing him stare blankly, Vanessa shook him lightly.
“She never told you?”
“Then have you ever seen where she keeps it?”
Just as Noah was about to pull away, Samuel quickly dragged Vanessa aside.
“Look, you’re scaring him!”
“Come over here.”
The two moved farther down the hallway.
“You’re being too impatient.”

Vanessa glared at him. “You think I don’t know that? Vivian’s in a coma. This is the perfect opportunity to find out where my parents‘ inheritance is! If we don’t get that money, how are we supposed to survive this crisis?”
Samuel took a deep breath. “Noah can’t speak. Kids like him are often more sensitive than others. Take your time. If he gets suspicious, it’ll be even harder to get answers.”
Vanessa clicked her tongue. “What a hassle. Why couldn’t Vivian just die? If she did, Noah’s still a minor. We could adopt him, and the inheritance would legally become ours.”
“You little brat!” Vanessa was panting from chasing him. “Why were you running so fast?”
Iris Noir.
