Chapter 223 Contangious

These two were impossible to separate.

The Wolfe family had spent years grooming Emily.

From childhood, they had filled her head with romance stories, made her watch love movies and ined her ridiculous exercises analyzing exactly when people developed feelings and when they truly fell lov

All of that accumulated knowledge led her to one conclusion:

There was absolutely no way she could wedge herself between Ares and Iris.

And that wasn’t even the worst part.

The two of them were frighteningly alike.

Brilliant.

Perceptive.

Almost impossible to manipulate.

One step forward led to those two overwhelming obstacles.

One step back led to the relentless pressure of the Wolfe family.

Emily felt like she was losing her mind.

Meanwhile, Iris and Ares returned to the banquet hall together.

The moment she entered, she spotted Zane sitting not far away. He kept sneaking glances at her but never approached.

The sight was oddly amusing. “I need to go talk to someone.”

Zane was currently trying to figure out how to speak with Iris without having Ares mistake him for a romantic rival.

To his surprise, Iris seemed to read his mind and walked over herself.

“Iris!” His eyes lit up. “Congratulations-”

Before he could finish, however, Director Hayes beat him to it.

The older man immediately started chatting with Iris first.

Zane slumped back into his chair.

Apparently, he’d have to wait his turn.

“What is it?”

After exchanging a few polite words with Director Hayes, Iris found an excuse to send him elsewhere.

Then she tapped lightly on Zane’s table and pulled out the chair beside him.

“You just sat down like that?” Zane glanced toward Ares. “What if Mr. Barclay gets jealous?”

He quietly scooted his chair farther away.

Just in case.

Iris looked him up and down.

“I doubt it.”

“Hey!” Zane protested. “I’m pretty popular too, you know. Maybe not as popular as Mr. Barclay, but people confess to me all the time!”

That was admittedly an exaggeration. Still, it wasn’t entirely untrue.

“Get to the point.”

Immediately, Zane’s expression became serious.

“This arrived recently.”

He lowered his voice.

“It’s urgent, so I figured I’d bring it up here.”

He handed her a pitch–black invitation.

“The annual conference was moved up. One week from now.”

The so–called conference wasn’t actually an academic event.

It was a gathering of elite hackers.

“Same answer as always.” Iris didn’t even hesitate. “Make up an excuse and decline.”

She had stopped accepting jobs through that website long ago.

The conference itself was boring, and she had no interest in attending.

Zane looked troubled. “I don’t think that’s going to work this time. The organizer specifically requested your attendance.”

Specifically requested her?

Iris opened the invitation.

The moment she saw the organizer’s name, all confusion vanished.

“Oh, that explains it.”

“Who is it?” Xavier Hayes leaned over curiously and glanced at the card.

Then he slapped his forehead.

“Oh! Him! The guy who’s been stuck at number two on the rankings forever! The one who lost you at several conferences and spent years trying to challenge you again!”

He remembered the incident vividly.

Iris had immediately blocked the man afterward.

Then she’d left the website entirely, abandoning her account.

The poor guy had spent years using every technical method imaginable trying to locate her.

He’d never succeeded.

“Looks like he’s doing pretty well now.” Xavier chuckled. “He’s organizing the conference himself. Probably wants to recover his dignity.”

“Boss, are you really not going?”

Just like every previous invitation, Iris snapped the card shut and tossed it back onto Zane’s lap.

“Not going.”

The fact that the invitation had been mailed to one of her old fake addresses told her everything she

needed to know.

His skills clearly hadn’t improved much.

“Fine.” Zane slipped the invitation back into the envelope. “I’ll handle it the usual way.”

His plan was simple.

Find somewhere outside.

Burn it.

Though for some reason, this invitation felt different from the previous ones.

Before he could think further, a tiny figure suddenly appeared between him and Iris.

“You’re not allowed to give Iris a love letter!”

“Sister Iris!”

The mood swing was so fast it was almost impressive.

“Is being busy contagious or something?”

“Forget it! I forgive you! That’s how generous and understanding I am!”
