“Emily got into Capital University too. The two of you will be classmates.”

Julie sighed dramatically.

“I wish I could skip another grade. Then I’d be starting college with you guys!”

Students about to enter their senior year always seemed especially jealous of recent graduates–months of freedom and no homework.

“Emily’s family is… well…” Julie hesitated. “They’re a little old–fashioned when it comes to sons and daughters. But Emily herself is a good person. You two might even become friends.”

“That depends on her.” Iris looked out the window.

Against the dark night sky, one lone star shone apart from all the others.

Its light was faint and fragile, as though it might disappear at any moment.

“We’ve all heard the rumors her family spread about her and Ares,” Julie continued, waving a hand dismissively.

“But that was all her family’s doing. None of it was Emily’s fault.”

She flopped back onto the bed.

“Forget it. Let’s talk about something–more interesting.”

“Come over here and lie down. If there’s anyone in Capital City’s elite circles you want gossip about, I’ve got stories on everyone.”

Iris had little interest in upper–class gossip.

Except when it came to one person.

“Ares?”

Julie immediately understood.

“Oh, him? You don’t even have to ask around. There are rumors about him everywhere.”

“Most of them are complete nonsense, though. No way to verify any of it.”

Iris nodded. “Tell me anyway.”

“Well, before you came along, people swore he’d never dated anyone. Half of Capital City thought he was gay. One of his business partners even tried to impress him by secretly taking him to a private club and arranging male escorts.

Julie burst out laughing.

“When Grandpa Barclay found out, he teased that poor guy for months.”

Iris couldn’t help smiling. “What about before that?”

“Honestly, I know more about his childhood. But I’m not as familiar with what happened after he ame back from overseas.”

Iris paused. “After he came back?”

“Yeah.” Julie nodded.

“He studied abroad for a while. Then something happened to Emma, and he returned home.”

She frowned.

“Why?”

Seeing Iris lost in thought, Julie waved a hand in front of her face.

“Earth to Iris?”

Iris blinked. “It’s nothing.”

Julie wasn’t the type to overthink things. She simply shrugged and continued talking.

Before long, sleepiness overtook her. In the middle of a sentence, she drifted off.

Iris lay quietly on the other side of the bed, staring up at the ceiling.

Had she met Ares before?

Why couldn’t either of them remember?

The next morning, Iris and Julie came downstairs wearing pajamas.

Chloe was already dressed, styled, and seated at the dining table.

“I’m heading out right after breakfast. Emma’s already on her way here.”

As she spoke, Chloe shot Iris a smug look.

If Iris was too busy with work to spend time with Emma, then Chloe would gladly become Emma’s favorite person instead.

Julie glanced around.

Richard and Eleanor hadn’t come downstairs yet.

She clicked her tongue.

“Seriously? Some people actually think winning over the niece will help them win over the uncle?”

You-!” Chloe immediately bristled.

Before the argument could escalate, Vincent entered the room and took a seat.

The two girls reluctantly fell silent.

Vincent looked at Iris. “Iris, is everything at Venus under control now? Do you still need me to you to the office today?”

Then he added,

“You could always take a break and go to the amusement park with Chloe and Emma.”

The moment Chloe heard that suggestion, she jumped in. “Maybe next time. The tickets have to be booked in advance. They sold out ages ago.”

Ares immediately handed the meeting over to another assistant and walked out into the stairwell with his phone.

“Iris.” His voice was steady. “Tell!

“Emma isn’t answering her phone.”
