The second they disappeared around the corner, the leader reached for Iris’s hand.
Unfortunately for him, Iris moved first.
She caught his wrist.
Twisted.
And kicked the side of his knee.
The entire sequence took less than two seconds.
The next thing he knew, his face was pressed against the pavement.
His knee and forehead struck concrete simultaneously.
Pain exploded through his body.
“What the hell?!” He struggled violently. “Let me go!”
Iris planted one foot squarely between his shoulder blades.
“Stop moving.”
Instead, he fought harder.
A sharp crack echoed through the alley.
His scream followed immediately.
The surrounding boys froze.
For a brief moment, nobody moved.
Then the leader roared:

“What are you idiots waiting for?”
“Get her!”
The gang finally snapped out of their shock.
There were more than a dozen of them.
What were they afraid of?
Iris released the leader and stepped backward.
The first attacker never reached her.
One kick sent him crashing into a wall.
A second folded over clutching his stomach.
A third hit the ground before he even understood what happened.
The alley descended into chaos.
Fifteen minutes later, Iris walked away completely unharmed.
Behind her, bodies littered the alley.
Groans echoed from every direction.
Halfway to the café, she paused.
Her eyes drifted toward a patch of bushes across the street.
Someone was hiding there.
Watching.
After several seconds, she looked away and continued walking.

By the time Iris entered the café, most of the after-school crowd had already left.
Only one person remained.
A teenage boy sat quietly beside the window.
The moment he saw her, his face brightened.
“Noah.” Iris smiled. “Sorry for keeping you waiting.”
Noah Hart shook his head immediately.
After she sat down, he handed over a shopping bag.
Inside was a photo album.
Page after page contained pictures from Iris’s childhood.
Vivian had asked him to bring it.
Iris carefully set the album aside.
Then her attention shifted to the workbook lying on the table.
“You got stuck on a problem?”
Noah’s eyes lit up. He immediately pushed the workbook toward her and pointed to the final question.
Noah had been born mute.
Despite years of treatment, no doctor had managed to cure the condition.
Over the years, Iris had quietly searched for solutions herself.
She studied the question.
Picked up a pen.

Then began explaining.
Her methods were clear and simple.

Halfway through, Noah was already nodding enthusiastically.
The next hour passed quickly.
One problem became two.
Two became ten.

By the time the sun began sinking toward the horizon, Noah finally packed up his workbook with a satisfied smile.
Ever since childhood, he’d admired Iris.
To him, she could solve anything.
And someday, he wanted to become someone like her.
After Noah left, Iris pulled out her phone and prepared to call a taxi.
A cab was approaching from the far side of the street.
Perfect.
She raised her hand.
Then a black Rolls-Royce smoothly pulled in front of it.
The taxi immediately continued down the road.
Iris stared.
Did a luxury car just steal her taxi?
The rear window lowered.

Ares Barclay looked out.
“Need a ride?”
Iris blinked.
Why does this man keep appearing everywhere?
“I’ll call a cab.”
“At this hour?” Ares glanced around. “The evening rush is over. That taxi was probably your last easy opportunity.”
“I’ll have a friend pick me up.”
Iris immediately dialed Xavier.
The phone rang.
Then an automated message answered.
“The number you have dialed is currently unavailable.”
Iris closed her eyes.
Wonderful.
Across from her, Ares rested his chin against one hand.
The amusement in his eyes was impossible to miss.
“Looks like your friend is busy too.”
Iris silently added Xavier’s name to a growing mental blacklist.
Then she opened the car door.
Reluctantly.

She sat as far from Ares as physically possible.
“Just drop me near the New District.”
“Thank you.”
Ares glanced at the distance she’d deliberately put between them.
The corner of his mouth twitched.
For some reason, that made him want to tease her even more.
The ride back was surprisingly quiet.
At one point, Iris finally asked the question that had been bothering her.
“Why did you send me lunch?”
Ares looked out the window.

“The cafeteria at Capital Prep isn’t very good.” He said it so casually it almost sounded reasonable. “Emma wanted to eat out, so we picked up extra food.”
A brief pause.
“You happened to be nearby.”
“And later I happened to be nearby again while meeting a client.”
Every answer was perfectly logical.
Perfectly reasonable.
