Truthfully, she had fallen in love with one of the antique pieces and wanted to stay behind to negotiate with the store staff.
“Okay then.” She waved. “Be careful.”
Emily nervously glanced at Iris.
She was afraid Iris might object.
Or worse, insist Julie come along too.
But Iris said nothing.
Instead, she gently supported Emily’s other arm.
“Let’s go.”
And just like that, Emily successfully–and anxiously–led Iris out of the mall and toward a nearby hotel.
The two barely spoke during the walk.
When they reached the lobby and stopped to wait for the elevator, a loud whistle suddenly rang out.
Both girls turned.
“Well, look at that.” A man grinned as he approached. “Two beautiful ladies staying here too?”
Emily hadn’t expected the interruption. She gave a polite nod but said nothing.
The man didn’t take the hint.
“What room are you staying in?” His smile grew increasingly inappropriate. “Is it safe for two girls to sta here alone?”
Before Emily could respond, Iris stepped slightly in front of her.
“That’s none of your concern.”
Her voice was cool and calm.
“And stop harassing my friend.”
The word friend caught Emily completely off guard.
“How about we go together?”
The man still wouldn’t give up, edging closer.

Iris shot him a cold glance.
Heimmediately backed away several steps.
“Why does a woman have to look so scary?”
He muttered under his breath before turning and leaving, no longer daring to bother them.
Emily quietly let out a breath of relief.
“Thank you.”
She had never expected Iris to call her a friend.
The two rode the elevator upstairs.
As the floor numbers steadily climbed, Emily’s heart grew heavier with every passing second.
Ding.
The elevator doors slid open.
Seeing Emily still frozen inside, Iris stepped out first.
“Aren’t you coming?”

Emily snapped back to reality and hurried after her, her nerves in knots. Her father had told her all she had to do was lure Iris into that room. She wouldn’t have to do anything else. She wouldn’t even have to lay a finger on her.
If she succeeded…
She wouldn’t have to go on those disgusting arranged dates anymore.
Even if she could never be with Ares…
At least she’d buy herself a little more time.
But…
Their footsteps disappeared into the plush carpet lining the hallway.
It was so quiet they couldn’t even hear themselves walking.
The truth was…
Iris had never done anything to hurt her.
Most of Capital City’s elite looked down on the Wolfe family.

But Iris was different.
Back at Edmund Ashcroft’s place, she’d even offered to help.
Emily had simply refused.
Walking a few steps ahead, Iris already knew the room number Emily had given her.
She had long since noticed Emily’s unusual behavior.
She simply chose not to mention it.
The two stopped outside the suite.
Through the door, Iris thought she could hear faint noises coming from inside.
“This is the room?”
“Y–Yes…”
Emily watched as Iris took the key card from her hand and moved to unlock the door.
Just one more second…
And her father’s plan would succeed.
Beep.
The reader recognized the key card-
At that exact moment, Emily suddenly shoved Iris aside with all her strength.
The card slipped away before the lock disengaged.
The door never opened.
The key card clattered onto the floor.
Emily hurriedly picked it up.
“I just remembered… I think the dress was already taken out of the room. Let’s go buy another one instead.”
Before Iris could respond, Emily grabbed her wrist and hurried toward the elevators as though she we fleeing from something.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
She could feel Iris’s kindness.
