Hannah had run into a student who needed help on the way over, which delayed her arrival. Shadn’t expected to show up and immediately see Iris standing with President Wade.
“Nothing,” Iris replied. “Just a small misunderstanding.”
“Oh, right!”
Hannah’s expression brightened.
“I got approval from the school! We’re in the same dorm room now, and we have two other roommates!
Since she hadn’t managed to secure one of the private dormitories, Hannah had simply applied to room with Iris instead.
At that moment, Eleanor walked over and greeted President Wade, who was standing nearby.
“President Wade is here too? What a coincidence.”
After making sure the driver had carried all the luggage upstairs and helped organize the dorm room, she came looking for Iris.
“Iris, did you finish all the registration paperwork?”
“Yep. Everything’s done.”
Iris deliberately didn’t mention what had happened earlier.
She didn’t want Eleanor worrying about her.
“Then we’ll head back now. If anything comes up, call Mom anytime.”
Looking at the daughter she had only recently found again, Eleanor felt reluctant to leave.
Iris had barely been home for a few months before moving into a college dorm.
There was still so much Eleanor wanted to make up to her.
Love often came with a constant sense of not having done enough.
Sensing her mother’s disappointment, Iris reached out and took her hand.
“I’ll come home on weekends whenever I have time.”
Only then did Eleanor smile.
“Just come back occasionally. The rest of the time, go out and enjoy college with your friends.”

After unpacking a few essentials, they realized it was already lunchtime and headed to the dining al
As they walked across campus, conversations buzzed around them.
“Did you hear? One of the freshmen got a handwritten admission letter from the university rent
“What? Haven’t you been following the news? Apparently there was some misunderstanding beforund her admission was revoked and then reinstated. That’s probably why it was handwritten.”
Iris had originally intended to keep a low profile.
Instead, thanks to that unexpected incident, she had suddenly become one of the most talked–about students on campus.
Ironically, Chloe’s plans hadn’t gone nearly as well.
She had imagined being the center of attention.
Instead, everyone seemed focused on Iris.
Sitting on the second floor of the dining hall with several friends who had also been admitted to Capital University, Chloe listened to the conversations around her.
“That freshman is seriously gorgeous.”
“Seriously. I’ve never seen someone with that kind of presence before.”
“I know, right? How does she make such simple clothes look so good?”
“I was wondering the same thing. The fit is incredible.”
“Well, it helps when you have her face and figure.”
Almost everyone was talking about Iris.
Only a handful of people even mentioned Chloe.
A beautiful, wealthy girl might attract a few extra glances.
But someone connected to a memorable story would remain the topic of conversation for much longer.
Chloe’s face turned green with anger.
She had endured so much at home specifically so that today—her first day at university–everyone’s attention would be on her.
“Iris did it on purpose,” she hissed. She wanted all the attention on herself.”
The girl beside her quickly offered comfort.

“Don’t worry, Chloe. So many people from our class got into Capital University. You’ll have plenty of Opportunities to deal with her later.”
“Exactly!”
Another girl smiled.
“Speaking of which, let me introduce you to my cousin. She’s the vice president of the student coure and a junior this year. Whatever plans you have, she can help.”
After being surrounded by supportive friends, Chloe’s mood finally improved a little.
Completely unaware of the plotting happening across campus. Iris was standing in line with Hannah to get
lunch.
Knowing Iris disliked crowded places, Hannah had reserved seats upstairs in advance.
The second–floor dining area consisted of semi–private booths separated by partitions.
“What do you think?”
Hannah pointed at the food.
“I personally think Dining Hall One has the best dishes.”
Iris sampled every dish on her tray.
“It’s okay.”
A couple of the dishes were genuinely good.
The rest were standard cafeteria fare.
As they ate, a familiar voice drifted over from a nearby booth.
“Dining Hall Two is packed with freshmen today. Good thing this side isn’t as crowded.”
Nathan was carrying a tray with several classmates.
By coincidence, they sat in the booth directly next to Iris and Hannah.
Only a thin divider separated the two groups.
“Professor Joe is in a bad mood today. None of us want to walk into that minefield.”

“Cut it out.” He elbowed the guy beside him. “My girlfriend and I are doing just fine.”
“I just thought I saw someone I know… though I must’ve been mistaken.”
