Chapter 281 Test Her
One afternoon, several girls gathered around her during a break.
“Iris,” one of them asked curiously, “besides rifles, do you know how to use any other weapons?
“Some do.”

Ever since they won the competition, everyone in the Biomedical Sciences Department had been enhe moon. Their attitude toward Iris couldn’t have been better.
After all, she was the reason military training had become so much easier for everyone.
Their benefactor didn’t want to record videos? So what? She had the skills to back it up. If she didn’t want to film anything, she didn’t have to.
Not only was everyone friendly toward her, but people constantly slipped her snacks and drinks, gathering around her to chat.
Though most of the time, they were the ones doing the talking.
A group of male students watched from a distance as she was surrounded by girls. One of them clicked his
tongue.
“So what if she knows how to take apart a gun? What’s there to be jealous of?”
If she were a guy, that would be one thing. But she was a girl. Why was she attracting so much attention from other girls?
One of the girls happened to overhear him and immediately rolled her eyes.
“That’s still better than standing around here doing nothing and talking trash about people.”
The boy glared, ready to argue back, but his friend quickly pulled him away.
After all, she was right. They couldn’t do what Iris had done. If they started a fight, they’d be the ones in the wrong. And if they attracted the attention of the chief instructor, they’d just get another lecture.
The chief instructor seemed to like Iris quite a bit.
During a break, Iris headed to Professor Joe’s office. Before she even reached the door, she heard a familiar voice inside.
“Ms. Gabriela, we’ve already explained this once. There are only three laboratory positions available this year. Iris did not take your spot. She was personally recommended by Professor Joe. No matter how much you argue, the decision won’t change.”
The department chair sighed and patiently explained.
Standing outside the office, Iris decided it wasn’t the best time to go in. She leaned against the wall and
wanted.

“Even if there are only three positions, why was I eliminated? I ranked first in the final exams last enester. Yet you’d rather accept a freshman than let me into the lab. Doesn’t that seem strange?”
She had complete confidence in her academic performance and simply couldn’t accept that shed been denied the opportunity.
The department chair sighed again.
“Why don’t you head back for now? We’ll discuss it further with Professor Joe.”
When Gabriela stepped out of the office, she found Iris waiting by the door. As she passed her she let our a contemptuous snort.
Iris walked into the office.
The department chair was staring at a stack of documents and sighing to himself. The moment he saw her he straightened up and composed himself.
“Come have a seat, Ms. Noir. Professor Joe will be here shortly.”
He had deliberately invited both Iris and Professor Joe.
To be honest, he was extremely curious about this student. He wanted Professor Joe to explain, right in front of Iris, exactly what was so extraordinary about her that she had been brought into the lab like a treasured prize during her very first year.
“Sorry you had to witness that. You probably know Gabriela as well, don’t you? She’s one of your upperclassmen. Her grades are quite good, but… well… never mind.”
He looked as though he desperately wanted to complain but couldn’t discuss another student’s private matters in front of a student.
“I understand.” Iris nodded and sat down to wait with him.
Earlier, she had asked Stella to remove the video of her argument with Gabriela from the internet. Stella had worked quickly–and while she was at it, she had also looked into Gabriela ‘s background.
Although Gabriela ‘s academic record was excellent, she had gotten into a serious conflict with a roommate during her freshman year, one that had nearly escalated into a homicide case. She appeared to have underlying psychological issues.
Nothing serious had happened since then, but the university remained concerned about the possibility of a repeat incident. Someone like that could become a ticking time bomb in a laboratory environment.
In fact, Professor Joe hadn’t even needed to oppose her application.
When the university leadership met to discuss the lab placements, they had already decided to reje Gabriela and arrange a different internship placement for her.

The laboratories at Capital University were simply too important. There was no room for mistakes.
That was also one of the reasons the department chair had called Iris in today.
Not long afterward, Professor Joe arrived.
“Dr-… Ms. Noir? Why are you here too?”
Professor Joe had never enjoyed departmental meetings and usually found the chair unbearably log- winded. But the moment he saw Iris, his expression transformed into a broad smile. Carrying his thermos, he happily took a seat across from her.
“I invited both of you here today to discuss Ms. Noir’s admission into the laboratory.”
“Would you like to test me?”
The department chair blinked in surprise. He had intended to ease into the subject indirectly, but Iris had simply said it outright.
Professor Joe immediately frowned. “You don’t trust my judgment?”
“Of course I do. But you know how important Capital University’s laboratories are. It’s better to be cautious.”
Professor Joe grunted. “Fine. Since you insist. Have you prepared a test?”
“Not a written test. I’d like her to perform an experiment in the lab.”
Iris nodded. “No problem.”
The three of them stood and opened the door.
To their surprise, Gabriela was still standing outside.
Judging from her posture, she had almost certainly been eavesdropping.
“Gabriela, why are you still here?” the department chair asked.
“I’d like to come and observe the lab assessment as well.”
The chair looked toward Professor Joe.
Ever since the incident involving the lecture, Professor Joe had been disappointed in Gabriela. He didn’t want her continuing to make trouble.
“You can come,” he said at last. “But once you’re inside, don’t touch any of the equipment.”
“Professor Joe, I’m already a junior. I’m not some clueless freshman. Why would I be careless?” Her meaning was obvious as she cast a pointed glance at Iris.

The four of them made their way to one of the university’s standard teaching laboratories.
Seeing that it wasn’t Professor Joe’s personal lab, Gabriela looked disappointed.
“We’re not doing the assessment in Professor Joe’s lab?”

“Professor Joe’s lab contains a lot of expensive and delicate equipment,” the department chair esined. “If someone accidentally damages something, the losses would be enormous.”
Which was exactly why the screening process for new lab members was so strict.
“Professor Joe, it’s been too long since I’ve conducted experiments myself. I’ll leave the test setup to you.”
The department chair spent most of his time buried in administrative work these days. While he stil understood the theory, his hands–on skills had grown rusty.
“Nervous?”
“That’s right.” Gabriela’s smile widened. “I arranged all of this. You’re about to be exposed.”
That way, no matter how close Iris was to Professor Joe, if her practical laboratory skills weren’t up to standard, she would never be allowed into the lab.
Just to be safe, she had even planned to record Iris’s entire experiment on her phone.

“Someone in my family served in the military.” She spoke calmly. “After retiring, they taught me.”
“You’re a grown man.” His tone sharpened. “Why are you picking on a student?”

Still, a bet was a bet.
“Everyone else may dismiss.” The chief instructor raised a hand. “Miss Noir, could you stay behind for a moment?”
