Meanwhile, Iris couldn’t have cared less about the increasingly ridiculous rumors.

She abandoned any attempt at explaining herself and focused on reviewing the latest research reports sent over from the institute.

Her time was valuable.

Far too valuable for gossip.

She had only read a few lines when her phone rang.

Seeing the caller ID, she answered.

“Zane?”

His voice came through immediately.

“Boss.”

His tone was unusually serious.

“You might need to come here in person.”

“Quarterly reports are finished,” Zane said over the phone. “There are a few things that require your approval in person.”

“Tomorrow during lunch break.”

Iris glanced out the window.

Richard Noir had planned a backyard barbecue tonight and had specifically asked her to come home early. He’d even bought several of her favorite foods.

“Tomorrow?” Zane sounded mildly pained.

“Yes.”

A brief silence followed.

“Understood. I’ll pick you up at noon.”

After hanging up, Zane stared at the mountain of financial reports piled across his desk.

Then he sighed heavily.

Everything had to be organized and summarized before tomorrow.

Overtime was a cruel thing.

That evening, warm string lights illuminated the garden of the Noir family estate.

The scent of grilled meat drifted through the summer air.

Richard stood beside the barbecue grill, enthusiastically cooking for his wife and daughters.

Watching them enjoy the food filled him with satisfaction.

The internet had been right.

Family barbecues really did bring people closer together.

Across town, however, the atmosphere inside the Sutton household was far less relaxed.

Samuel Sutton sat in his study reviewing a project proposal for what felt like the hundredth time.

Vanessa entered and walked behind him.

Without warning, she snatched the proposal from his hands.

“You work too much.” She set the papers aside. “Your daughter’s waiting downstairs for dinner.”

Samuel frowned.

“I just want to review it one more time.”

“You’ve already reviewed it twenty times.” Vanessa rolled her eyes. “Everything’s fine. Every investment proposal we’ve submitted to Stellar Ventures has been approved.”

“That’s true, but this project is much larger.”

Samuel rubbed his forehead.

“I can’t shake the feeling that something’s off.”

“You’re overthinking it.”

Vanessa shoved him toward the door.

“Stellar Ventures has partnered with us for years. Of course they’ll invest.”

She grinned.

“They know how much potential we have.”

Then she added excitedly,

“Besides, Olivia says she has important news to announce tonight.”

At the dinner table, Vanessa nearly dropped her fork.

“Oh my God.”

She stared at Olivia.

“The mayor’s son likes you?”

Olivia lowered her eyes shyly.

“Maybe not likes me.”

She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

“He just said my violin playing was impressive.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Sweetheart, you’re still young.” She gave Olivia’s hand a gentle squeeze. “A lot of men start out admiring a woman’s talent.”

Her smile deepened.

“Besides, our Olivia is beautiful.”

The more Vanessa looked at her daughter-healthy, radiant, and fully recovered- the more pleased she felt.

If Olivia could win Ethan Vaughn’s heart…

And if Stellar Ventures approved tomorrow’s investment proposal…

The Sutton family would rise to a whole new level.

By then, the Whitmore family would realize what a mistake they’d made by calling off the engagement-and regret letting Olivia slip through their fingers.

The next afternoon, Samuel and Vanessa arrived at the headquarters of Stellar Ventures carrying those dreams with them.

Meanwhile, on the twenty-ninth floor.

Iris stood beside the executive desk, flipping through a stack of summarized reports.

After sitting in school all morning, her back hurt,

She had firmly rejected Zane’s suggestion that she sit down and rest.

“This project…”

She had barely begun speaking when the office door swung open.

“Mr. Walker! Long time no see!”

Samuel and Vanessa entered wearing practiced smiles.

The smiles immediately cracked when they spotted Iris standing beside him.

Both froze.

“What are you doing here?”

Three pairs of eyes turned toward Zane.

He suddenly felt the old injury in his ankle throbbing again.

Vanessa quickly took in the scene.

Zane was seated behind the executive desk.

Iris stood nearby holding documents.

Understanding flashed across her face.

An assistant.

Of course.

She must have realized her grades were hopeless and given up on college altogether.

“So, Mr. Sutton,” Zane said politely, “what brings you all the way from Kingsley today?”

Samuel finally remembered why he was there and hurriedly handed over the proposal.

“This is our newest development project.”

Confidence filled his voice. “Stellar Ventures was our first choice. We estimate at least a ninety-percent chance of doubling our investment.”

Zane’s headache returned the moment he saw the familiar company logo.

The truth was simple.

Samuel Sutton was terrible at business.

Project after project had lost money.

In recent years he’d somehow become even more ambitious, requesting larger and larger investments.

Stellar Ventures had spent years quietly covering his mistakes.

If Samuel weren’t Iris’s former foster father, his company would never have gotten through the front door.

Zane casually flipped through several pages.

His vision nearly darkened.

Garbage.

Every page was garbage.

Before he could speak, Iris looked up from the reports.
