Julian frowned. “Are you sure it was a woman?”

President Hank looked puzzled. “Of course. She was a very pretty young lady. She just left.”

Inside the car, Ares Barclay stared out the window as the city blurred past. The mention of that name had completely extinguished whatever interest he still had in touring the laboratory.

After a long silence, he finally spoke.

“Julian, investigate Zero Degrees Institute.”

His gaze darkened slightly.

“This may have something to do with the Dr. Zero we’re looking for.”

Back at the Noir residence, Chloe had lost her guaranteed admission spot and was forced to return to preparing for the college entrance exams.

The problem was that she’d spent the past few weeks convinced her acceptance was already secured. She hadn’t studied seriously at all, and now that she was trying to regain her momentum, she found it nearly impossible to focus. Her temper only grew worse by the day.

Whenever Richard and Eleanor weren’t around, she took her frustration out on everyone nearby.

“It’s all Iris’s fault!” she snapped. “If Iris hadn’t encouraged Hannah, I’d be on vacation overseas right now!”

The thought made Chloe grind her teeth. She hated Iris so much that she wanted to march next door and beat her up herself.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

A school–wide announcement appeared on the screen.

“A hiking trip?”

Capital Preparatory Academy had organized a mountain–climbing activity for the senior class. Officially, it was meant to relieve stress before the exams, with the possibility of a barbecue and overnight camping afterward.

“Mountain climbing?” Chloe scoffed. “It’s hot, exhausting, and pointless. Who would want to go?”

Curling her lip in disgust, she opened a chat with one of the teachers, already preparing an excuse to skip it.

“Exactly,” one of the maids remarked casually from behind her. “And that mountain can be a little dangerous. It’s been raining lately. If something happened out there…”

Chloe’s fingers froze above the keyboard.

If something happened…

A strange look crossed her face.

Slowly, she backed out of the chat window and opened the registration thread instead.

Count me in.

At almost the same moment, Iris received the same notification.

She glanced at Xavier Hayes.

“The medicinal herb you mentioned before,” she said, “it’s in the restricted area of X Mountain, isn’t it?”

Xavier nodded.

“Yeah.”

Iris studied the message on her phone for a moment before typing a short reply.

Eleanor Noir, meanwhile, approved of the school’s decision.

“Students should relax once in a while,” she said warmly. “Thankfully, the weather isn’t too hot anymore, so you won’t get heatstroke hiking. I’ll pack some lightweight snacks for you. Have fun.”

Capital Preparatory Academy never scheduled activities during weekends or holidays, so the hike had been arranged for Friday instead. That way, students would still have Saturday and Sunday to recover before classes resumed.

X Mountain was one of Capital City’s most popular attractions. Its elevation was moderate, the scenery beautiful, and the trails well maintained. As long as visitors stayed away from the undeveloped areas, there was very little danger.

Because it wasn’t tourist season and the hike fell on a weekday, the mountain wasn’t crowded.

“Oh my God, studying for so long nearly killed me!”

“It’s so nice to finally get outside!”

“The air up here is amazing!”

The students gathered shortly after sunrise while the lingering coolness of the night still hung in the air. Everything smelled fresh and clean.

Each class climbed according to its assigned order, with Foundation Class bringing up the

rear.

Sophie Bennett practically dragged the class representative along behind her. The poor girl rarely exercised, and after only a short distance, she was already exhausted.

“You’re way too slow!” Sophie complained. “Look at Iris! Hurry up or we’re going to lose sight of her!”

Most of the students were already panting, sweat dripping down their faces.
