Chapter 85 Trap

Iris pressed her lips together, her gaze drifting past the fortune teller.

Behind him stood a small grove of trees, and partially concealed behind one of the thicker trunks was the hem of a white skirt.

She said nothing.

Instead, she rose to her feet and walked away with Sophie.

The moment they disappeared from sight, the fortune teller yanked off his sunglasses and began folding up his table with a mournful expression.

“Miss…” he called toward the trees. “Does this count? Have I completed the dare?”

Emma Barclay poked her head out from behind the trunk and nodded solemnly.

“You did great!” she declared. “You passed!”

“Go back to the campsite first. I’m going to find Iris and play!”

“And if my uncle asks, just tell him exactly what happened!”

Before anyone could stop her, the little girl darted off in the direction Iris had gone. Even the bodyguards failed to react in time.

Emma had been puzzled earlier. Why had her uncle suddenly organized a company team- building trip that involved mountain hiking and camping?

Now she understood.

Iris’s school was here too.

As she ran, she rubbed her chin thoughtfully. If she kept arranging opportunities like this- and made sure to praise her uncle whenever possible–then maybe, just maybe, Iris would eventually realize that her uncle really was a good man.

By the time the seniors had climbed more than halfway up the mountain, the sun hung high overhead and the day had reached its hottest point.

The teachers called for a rest break.

“I’m going to the restroom,” Iris said.

Sophie nodded absentmindedly. “Okay.”

A second later, she froze.

Wait.

Why was Iris taking that enormous backpack with her just to use the bathroom?

Unaware of Sophie’s confusion, Iris slipped away from the group and headed toward the restricted area of X Mountain, carefully avoiding the other students.

Not far behind, a pair of eyes tracked her retreating figure.

Only after watching her disappear deeper into the trees did the man lift a hand toward the people behind him.

“We’re going in too,” he said.

“Follow her.”

The staff assigned to guard the entrance to the restricted area had been temporarily called away to assist with the arrival of the Barclay Corporation employees attending their camping retreat.

After all, who would be foolish enough to sneak into an off–limits section of X Mountain?

As it turned out, three separate groups managed to do exactly that in a single day.

Mason Reed knew this place better than anyone.

He loved chasing thrills and often slipped into the restricted area for fun. Over time, he’d

“I was worried we wouldn’t get a chance if she never ended up alone,” Mason sneered, a cigarette dangling from his lips. “Who would’ve thought she’d walk right in here herself?”

He glanced at the men behind him.

Unlike the pathetic followers he ordered around at school, these were genuine thugs- grown men hardened by years on the streets. They were ruthless, experienced, and more than willing to resort to violence.

“Young Master Mason,” one of them said with a scar–faced grin, “what’s this chick doing out here? Meeting up with a guy?”

He laughed crudely.

“Well, if she’s willing to meet one man, she won’t mind entertaining a few more of us, right?”

Mason crushed his cigarette beneath his shoe.

“Remember that trap we set up here last time?”

The trap had been carefully concealed. Anyone heading deeper into the forest would have to pass through it.

Iris Noir wouldn’t be an exception.

The group remained where they were, lighting fresh cigarettes as they waited for the sound of someone falling in.

Once they heard it…

They’d go collect their prey.

Unbeknownst to them, a tiny figure dressed in white had also wandered into the restricted

zone.

Emma Barclay’s little legs simply couldn’t keep up with Iris. After losing sight of her within minutes, she’d only managed to remember that Iris had entered this area before hurrying after her.

The trees grew tall and dense overhead.

Before long, Emma had completely lost her sense of direction.

Fear slowly crept into her chest. She was just about to call out Iris’s name when she spotted a familiar black backpack in the distance.

Iris!

Her eyes lit up.

Afraid of losing sight of her again, Emma immediately ran toward her.

Meanwhile, Iris remained focused on searching for the medicinal herb Xavier Hayes had
