Chapter 38: Silver Lake

Irina’s POV

The room in Silver Fang is beautiful.

Claim

It’s the first coherent thought that forms in the quiet aftermath of the storm. I can’t believe I was able to escape Blue Moon. I thought I was done for, but thanks to Derek and Aiden, I was able to escape that place.

Not for long, but that would be enough to gather evidence that I’m innocent.

“It’s quiet,” Theia whispered. “But at least we are safe.”

I walked to the window, my fingers tracing the smooth wood of the sill. “I know.”

Derek had been nothing but kind. He’d brought me here himself, showed me all the room, and told me to rest until he called me for dinner.

“Take all the time you need, Irina,” he’d said, his chocolate eyes warm and sincere. “No one will bother you here. You are safe.”

Safe…

My gaze fell on the small bag I’d been allowed to grab. It didn’t have much, but it would be enough until I started working and could buy myself some proper clothes.

A soft knock on the door pulled me from my thoughts.

“Irina? It’s Derek.”

“Come in,” I said, turning from the window.

He entered, his presence a calm anchor. He didn’t crowd me, simply leaned against the doorframe. “Settling in alright?”

“Yes. Thank you again. For… for everything.” The words felt inadequate for the magnitude of

what he’d done.

He nodded, his expression turning slightly more serious. “There’s something you should know. I just got off the phone with Aiden.”

My heart stuttered, a frantic bird crashing against its cage. “What? Why?”

“He wanted to know if we arrived safely,” Derek said, but I could tell he was hiding something. I wonder what it is. “And to ask for a pass. He will come in a few days to see how you are

doing, but you can refuse to be with him if you want to.”

I wanted to refuse immediately, but I had to be fair.

If it weren’t for him, I’m sure Alpha Richard and Serim would have found a way to keep me in Blue Moon. He had intervened when he didn’t have to, risking a political incident for an Omega he supposedly despised.

“He helped us,” Theia murmured, her voice a mix of confusion and that stubborn, unkillable hope. “He asked us for a chance and proved he wanted us.”

“I know.”

Derek was watching me, his silence patient. He wasn’t pushing. He was simply presenting the facts and leaving the power in my hands. It was a respect I hadn’t realized I was starving

for.

“Did he say why?” I asked, my voice quieter than I intended. “Why he wants to see me?”

Derek’s gaze was steady. “No, but I think he realized how stupid he was.”

Theia growled lowly; she didn’t like that someone had insulted our mare, even if he deserved

the insult.

“As you know, I’m a newly established Alpha. I tried to ask around what happened between Aiden and you, but nobody had a straight answer.”

I sighed. I’m sure the only person who knows is the one who impersonated me.

“There is no straight answer,” I said, my voice flat. “Because there was no incident. One day, he had changed; whenever someone mentioned my name, he got angry. I tried to understand what happened, but as you said, nobody had a clue.”

Derek’s brow furrowed. “That makes no sense. Aiden is many things, but he’s not capricious. There’s always a reason, a logic, however cold.”

“A reason built on lies,” Theia snarled, her protective instincts flaring.

1 may know the truth, but I can’t reveal it yet. Not until I figure out who was behind that cheap

trick.

“Perhaps he wants to explain,” I finished, the words hanging in the quiet room.

I was lying to Derek, straight to his face, even though he had helped me, but I couldn’t do anything else.

“If that’s the case, I hope his explanation makes sense,” Derek said with a smile on his face.”

Why don’t we go down? I’m sure you are starving.”

I nodded and let him guide me downstairs. When they saw me pass, some omegas whispered. Most of them knew who I was and w ready commenting on why I was here.

“She is looking for an Alpha, and our Alpha doesn’t have a Luna,” One said.

“Totally, I’m sure she is after his power. She doesn’t care how she gets it,” the other replied.

I simply ignored them; I was used to those kinds of comments. The words were different, but the melody of malice was the same. In Blue Moon, I was the thieving impostor. Here, I was the ambitious gold-digger. It seemed my role was always to be the villain in someone else’s

story.

But something was different this time. The weight of the words felt… lighter. Perhaps because I knew they weren’t true. Or perhaps because for the first time, I had a powerful ally who saw me as a person, not a pawn or a problem.

Derek, walking beside me, didn’t seem to hear the whispers, or if he did, he gave no sign. His calm, steady presence was a buffer against the lingering hostility. He led me to a huge dinning room, I’m guessing the whole pack eats here, but for some reason it is deserted.

“I thought you might prefer some privacy for your first meal here,” he said, pulling out a chair

for me.

“Thank you,” I said, taking a seat.

I haven’t felt this warmth in so long that I feel like I could cry right this moment.

The food was served, and I tried to help the maids, but Derek told me to sit down. “You are a guest here, Irina. Let them serve you.”

The maids exchanged a glance. I’m not sure if Derek noticed it, but-

“If anyone is rude to you, tell me. You were given sanctuary in my pack, meaning if someone disrespects you, they are disrespecting me and will deal with the consequences accordingly.”

I gulped.

“He definitely heard those maids whispering,” Theia commented.

My cheeks burned a bright red. He hadn’t faced them directly; instead, he let this subtle comment out, and if someone else tried to start rumors about me, they would face his wrath.

“Thank you, Alpha Riegrow, I—”

“Derek,” he corrected gently. “You can call me Derek, Irina.”

I’m sure I look like a tomato by now. The heat in my cheeks was intense, if I could I would run to me room and hide under a pillow, but since I can’t, I should try to look nonchalant.

I managed a small, shaky nod. “Thank you… Derek.”

He smiled. I must say Derek is a very handsome man. Those warm chocolate eyes look at me with a kindness I never expected to see in a stranger.

“Anytime. I’m sure you are tired today, but tomorrow I’d love to show you the pack and meet my Beta.”
