Out of the corner of her eye, Louisa spotted the plain-looking bag. A fleeting look of contempt crossed her face, but she quickly regained her composure, patting my hand gently. “The thought’s what matters, dear. I don’t need much. They’ve stocked me up with tons of supplements already. Natalie, you don’t have to stress about gifts. If you’re stuck, just skip it next time.”
That was it. The last glimmer of warmth in my heart fizzled out.
It hit me then. In their world, I’d always be the awkward, penniless orphan who needed their pity. Their so-called kindness? It was built on the assumption that I was a charity case.
Back in the day, I was truly broke. Louisa used to tell me she believed I’d make a great match for Landon and a valuable asset to Thorn Pack. I was so grateful that I poured my heart into proving myself. I brushed off my own hurt, all because I wanted to show I was good enough for Landon.
But now, I saw the truth. Louisa’s faith in me was more like a boss’ expectations for a hard-working employee.
When I was younger, I was blind to all this. But spending time with Fiona and Roger opened my eyes.
Why did Fiona and Roger feel like family, while Louisa remained just an elder I respected from afar? Even though they all stood up for me, there was a huge difference.
The answer was clear.
Louisa was doling out favors, but Fiona and Roger? They treated me as an equal. They truly saw me as their grandson’s mate. I didn’t have to do a thing; just being myself made them happy.
I looked down, picked up the plastic bag they’d dismissed as junk, and calmly untied it.
Inside was a seemingly ordinary rosewood box that emitted a faint, inviting scent. When I opened it, the soft silk lining cradled several plump Lunaris Elixir Herbs. Their roots were well-defined, and they seemed to hum with a strange, life-giving energy. Next to them sat a small bottle of Radiant Crystal Nectar, their rich, blood-like color and muted aroma hinting at their quality,
I said, meeting each shocked gaze in the room, “These aren’t cheap trinkets. I had people hunt these down. They’re fifty-year-old Lunaris Elixir Herbs and top-notch Radiant Crystal Nectar. They’re so rare you won’t find them on the regular market. I was in a hurry, so I didn’t think about the packaging.”
Anna gasped, leaning in for a closer look, “Fifty-year-old Lunaris Elixir Herbs. No way! These are the crème de la crème of herbs! And the Radiant Crystal Nectar…”
Grace’s face went red with embarrassment. She’d been ready to toss these precious gifts out! “Natalie, where on earth did you get these? Are they for real?”
“The box has the official seal and tracking code from the International Werewolf Resources Management Committee,” I replied coolly.

Anna picked up the box for a closer look, and her face instantly showed a mix of shock and disbelief. The items inside were far more valuable than all the fancy gifts they’d brought, easily totaling nearly 10 million dollars!
Landon furrowed his brow and complained, “Natalie, what’s with all the spending?” There was concern in his voice, but also a bit of suspicion. He probably assumed I was still using the cash he’d given me ages ago.
I retorted, “What’s wrong with spending my own dough?”
That shut him up for a second. Then he mumbled, “No problem… I just don’t want you blowing your money like this.”
Louisa looked a bit awkward. She quickly grabbed my hand and squeezed it. “Natalie, I get your gesture. These gifts are amazing, but you really don’t have to go overboard next time. No need to impress me. Just make up with Landon, come back home, and get back to the company, okay?”
