Upon arriving at the airport, I immediately bought her a ticket for the soonest-departing flight to a neighboring country where visas weren’t required. “Get going there first. I’ll arrange for someone to handle your visa and help you apply to a school. Once things calm down, I’ll figure out a way to get Nathan over to be with you,” I said, trying my best to sound reassuring.
“What if I leave and can’t ever come back?” Aaliyah still had a bit of sense left, her voice quivering with anxiety. “I’ve consulted a lawyer. If Thorn Pack stands up for me, hires top legal counsel, and covers the compensation, I might be able to get probation…”
And the only shot of getting Thorn Pack on board was to make our mate relationship public!
“I’ll join you as soon as I wrap things up here,” I cooed, putting on that familiar show of affection that I’d almost convinced myself of. I gently pulled her shivering body close, just like I’d done so many times to comfort her in the past.
But this time, Aaliyah didn’t relax into my embrace. Her body went stiff as a board, and her fingernails dug into my shoulders through my shirt, sending a sharp jolt of pain.
She murmured, her voice as cold as ice, “Landon, are you in such a rush to send me away ’cause you’re scared Natalie’ll find out about us?”
My heart skipped a beat, thudding so hard it could burst out of my chest. “What are you talking about!” I pushed her away abruptly, scowling, trying to mask my guilt with anger. “You’re my one and only mate! My deal with Natalie is just a ploy, a phony mate bond! You know that well! Everything I’m doing is to keep us safe!”
“Yeah, right?” She let out a bitter smile, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. Her look seemed to cut through all my lies, a blend of fragility and a spine-chilling coldness.
I fought down the unease creeping up on me and gently stroked her cold face, repeating the promise that had lost its meaning over the past decade. “Promise me, stop causing a ruckus. Just keep your head down. and stay safe, and wait for me. My promise to you is the same as it was ten years ago. I’ll be with you… always.”
That last bit sounded so empty, even to my own ears.
Aaliyah fell silent, simply snuggling into my arms until the boarding announcement came over the loudspeaker. I watched her slender figure vanish through the security checkpoint, feeling as if a huge burden had been lifted off my shoulders, yet also like I’d lost a part of myself.
Once I was certain she was gone, I turned around and practically bolted out of the airport.
Aaliyah’s POV:
I had had enough of Landon’s promises that might never be fulfilled. All I knew was that I couldn’t leave this place and my child behind.

It wasn’t until Landon’s car had driven away for a while that I slipped out quietly through another exit of the airport terminal, wearing a cap and a mask. I quickly hailed a taxi and vanished into the night.
Landon’s POV:
It was a sleepless night for me. The fatigue of quickly seeing Aaliyah off and the taut nerves gave me a pounding headache. As the first light of dawn peeked through, I made my way back to the Richardson Villa in my car. Deep down, I knew the turmoil had just started.
In the sitting room, Grace sat there, her face ashen with anger. Taking care of Louisa these days had taken a toll on her, and last night’s exposure of Aaliyah’s deeds had really set her off. Spotting me, she shot right up. “What’re you gonna do about Aaliyah’s fiasco?”
“I’ve sent her out of Maritime City. And for the online trouble, I’ll get the best lawyer for her and cover all the compensation costs,” I replied, forcing my voice to stay steady.
“She broke the law! Stirring up slander and using human media to badmouth our kind! Are you trying to sink the whole Thorn Pack by covering for her?” Grace roared, slamming the table so hard that the cups clattered. “Can’t you see who she really is? A jealous and mean-spirited Omega!”
“Mom!” I raised my voice, my temples throbbing like crazy. “I think we’re partly at fault here, too. If you guys hadn’t pushed her so hard and used Nathan to threaten her, she wouldn’t have been pushed to do this…”
