We were in the middle of dinner when, out of the blue, a sharp, ear-piercing doorbell cut through the peaceful atmosphere in the dining room like a shriek.
Grace shot a disapproving look at the maid standing at attention. “Do we have any guests coming today?”
“No, Mrs. Grace Richardson,” the maid replied promptly.
Just as the maid finished speaking, the butler scurried in, clutching an unremarkable file bag. “Mr. Benjamin Richardson, there’s a lady outside. She’s all bundled up, wearing a hat, so it’s impossible to make out her face. She simply told me that I must hand these things… over to you.”
I kept on munching away, not giving it a second thought. Every day, there were tons of people trying to get in our good graces, sending all kinds of business proposals or gifts. It was old news to me.

“Son of a bitch!” I exploded with rage, slamming my fist on the solid-wood dining table so forcefully that it shuddered.
Startled out of his wits, Landon jolted to his feet, looking utterly bewildered. “Dad, what’s going on?”
Before the words fully left his mouth, my angry hand lashed out, landing a stinging slap. The sharp crack echoed through the room as his lips split and blood trickled down.
Grace and Louisa were left pale as ghosts. Grace let out a shrill scream and instinctively leaped forward to
shield Landon.
“Benjamin! Have you lost your marbles? Can’t you talk things through without getting physical?” Grace shrieked, her voice thick with tears.
Louisa, leaning on her cane, got up unsteadily. Her voice, hoarse with shock and fury, trembled. “What’s

“Take a gander at this!” I barked, my face as gloomy as a thundercloud. I angrily slapped the damned Soul . Bonding Pact onto the table.
Suddenly, the air in the dining room turned as still as death.
