I shut my eyes tight, steeling myself for my father’s impending wrath. The whistling sound of the wooden stick cutting through the air made my muscles go rigid, yet the agonizing pain I’d anticipated never arrived.

“Are you two trying to kill me with anger? Calm down this instant!” Louisa’s voice, quivering but firm, rang out. She’d rushed over from behind just in time to grab Benjamin’s arm mid-swing.

Blood ties were strong. Despite Benjamin’s eyes bulging with fury and his chest heaving like a bellows, he just couldn’t bring himself to strike.

With a sharp clunk, he flung the stick to the ground.

“Explain! What the hell is going on here?” Benjamin growled through clenched teeth, his voice thick with barely-held-back rage.

At this point, keeping secrets was pointless. After years of carrying this burden, the truth finally spilling out gave me an odd sense of relief. Little did I expect that Aaliyah had the nerve and determination to provoke this confrontation.

“As you can see.” I opened my eyes, my voice eerily calm, numb with a kind of “what-the-hell” resignation. “Aaliyah and I have already completed the soul-bonding.”

The revelation hit Grace and Louisa like a thunderbolt. Their faces registered shock as they struggled to process the news.

Benjamin let out a short, bitter laugh. “Good, just great. You’re really something! You’ve been deceiving us all these years, so smoothly! You’ve got some nerve!” His words dripped with sarcasm.

“Grandpa didn’t want Aaliyah and me together. I know I went against his wishes. I’ll take whatever punishment you give. But Aaliyah and Nathan are innocent. Nathan… is a pure-blooded pup of the Richardson family,” I mumbled, trying to plead their case.

Hardly had I finished speaking when Grace’s hand lashed out, landing a stinging slap on my face.

“You’re beyond redemption!” Grace’s neck flushed red with anger, and for the first time, angry tears welled up in her eyes. “Innocent? Aaliyah is a teacher who seduced her student, lacking basic moral awareness. She knew the family was against it, but still clung to you. She’s shameless!”

She was on the verge of a breakdown. The woman she’d loathed for years was my true mate, and the child she’d tried to get rid of was her own grandson. And Natalie, the one they’d always found fault with, was
