It took me a long time to struggle to my feet after they left. A sharp pain in my gut made me nauseous. I only made it a few steps before I bent over and vomited. The mix of blood and stomach acid filled me with humiliation and weakness I’d never known.

Just as I caught my breath, a team of men in community security uniforms rushed over. A bright flashlight beam hit my face. “Who let you in here to harass a resident? Get lost! Or we’re calling the police!” one of them yelled.

I wanted to roar back, but opening my mouth just pulled at the pain all over my body. All that came out was a sharp gasp. I bribed the gate guard to gain entry! How dare these lowly guards. treat me like this!

A few minutes later, I practically crawled back into my car. I didn’t even have the strength to start the engine. My phone kept vibrating. It was Aaliyah. She had called multiple times, which I’d ignored. This time, I answered.

“Come get me,” I said weakly, not even giving her a chance to speak. Hearing something was wrong, she immediately asked for my location.

After hanging up, I slumped over the steering wheel, miserable. But my mind was filled with Natalie’s ruthless eyes and her words. The physical pain was nothing compared to what she had made me feel.

Was there really no feeling left for me in her heart? What kind of spell had that man cast on

her?

Frustration and despair washed over me. But suddenly, I remembered her answer when I proposed.

I said, “Natalie, if I ever hurt you by accident someday, I sincerely ask for your forgiveness. Would you forgive me?”

“Of course I’d forgive you. You’re my mate. And you’re so good to me. What we have wasn’t easy to build. I wouldn’t give up on us easily,” she smiled.

It couldn’t be…

Natalie loved me for six years. How could she fall for someone else so quickly? Even if I hurt her, shouldn’t a deeper hurt make it harder to let go? She acted cold and bitter, and even used another man to get back at me. Didn’t that just prove she still cared-and couldn’t let go?

Thinking this, I couldn’t help but sneer.

I murmured, “Natalic, go ahead and keep up this act. Using some low-class man to make me jealous? Let’s see how long you can keep up this pathetic revenge.”

Natalie’s POV:

I had just gotten home and was about to call Leonardo when the doorbell rang. I saw it was him through the peephole and opened the door immediately.

“I thought your meeting tonight would run late.” I glanced at the time. It was just past nine. He’d told me earlier the meeting would last until after eleven, which was why we didn’t have dinner together. I’d used that gap to go to the auction alone. Otherwise, I would have asked him to come with me.

“It got canceled,” he said flatly, taking off his coat. I instinctively reached for it, but he pulled me into a one-armed hug instead, draping the coat over the console table.

“Did something unexpected happen?” I asked, concerned. He didn’t seem as relaxed as usual.

“You could say that…” His breath brushed my cheek. “I missed you so much. I didn’t want to be in a meeting.”

I was slightly taken aback. Warmth spread through my chest. I hugged his waist back and said softly, “Why didn’t you call me then? I could have come home earlier.”

Leonardo didn’t answer. He just looked at me deeply, his gaze so complex and profound I couldn’t quite read it.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” I asked.

“Landon was downstairs,” he said. His fingers stroked through my long hair. His tone was calm, but my heart sank.

“You saw everything?” I straightened up quickly, explaining earnestly, “Don’t misunderstand. I ran into him by chance today. And I made things perfectly clear to him.”

My confrontation with Landon today was partly because of Leonardo. I’d been thinking it over these days. The past didn’t matter most, and the present did. If it made Leonardo unhappy, I was willing to drop my grudge entirely and have nothing more to do with the Richardson family.

“I’m not misunderstanding.” His voice was low. A barely concealed coldness gathered in his eyes. “It just doesn’t sit right with me, seeing another male pestering you.” He held me tighter. He felt so strong and reliable, yet now there was a faint trace of unease about him.
