I was taken aback that Liam actually stood up for Chloe. His remark that we were picking on her really put me on the spot.
Pressed by his words, Amelia had no choice but to say, “It’s fine, Ms. Eleanor Kelly. Since Liam is hosting my birthday, let’s just do as he says.” Her voice was sweet, but the friend beside her was still fuming and shot a dirty look at Chloe as she walked away.
“Amelia has a kind heart, so you got lucky this time,” one of them spat out, still angry. “But Ms. Eleanor Kelly, your club’s service standards really need improvement. Even the manager should be someone competent, not someone who causes trouble.”
I smirked coldly but stayed silent, forced to just watch Chloe walk away.
The birthday party didn’t last much longer. Amelia excused herself to the restroom. I approached her while she was reapplying her lipstick.
“I hope everything is alright, Ms. Marshall? No hard feelings about today, I hope?” I asked with a bright smile.
Amelia instantly smiled back. “Of course not. I’ve always loved this club. I’m having a great time celebrating my birthday here.”
“Ms. Marshall, there’s actually something I feel I should tell you,” I said, looking directly at her.
Liam’s POV:
When Amelia returned to the private room, her whole demeanor had shifted. She sat down beside me. I’d been distractedly scrolling through my phone and offered her a routine smile when she returned, but she seemed upset.
“I think I’d like to call it a night and head home,” Amelia announced, stunning everyone. The party had barely started. Why did she end it now?
“What’s wrong?” I asked, puzzled. “Are you feeling unwell? Did something happen?”
“Yes, I don’t handle alcohol well. I’m starting to feel a bit dizzy,” Amelia replied with a strained smile, her tone flat.
Her friend beside her looked utterly confused. “Amelia, since when did your tolerance…” she
said.

A sharp warning glance from Amelia cut her off mid-sentence. I knew right then something was off. I didn’t press further, just stood and grabbed my jacket. “Alright, let’s get you home,” I offered.
Amelia nodded, saying goodbye to her friend and the other guests. “We’re heading out. Feel free to stay and enjoy yourselves.”
I’d already prepaid everything, so the party could continue. Seeing that Amelia was determined to leave, everyone stopped trying to persuade her to stay, though my friends still looked concerned. They were worried-could she have picked up on the subtle tension between Chloe and me carlier?
As we left, I glanced across the main area of the venue but didn’t see Chloe anywhere. I still couldn’t figure out why she was working here as a server. But it wasn’t my place to ask
anymore.
On the drive back, Amelia asked me, “That female manager earlier… She was Chloe, right? The second daughter of the Kelly family from Grayclaw Pack?”
I wasn’t expecting Amelia to know that. The car jerked slightly as I hit the brakes at a traffic light. “How did you know?” I kept my expression neutral.
“Eleanor told me,” she said.
“What else did she say?” I asked.
Amelia looked down and continued, “She said you had pursued Chloe before. Apparently, it’s common knowledge in our social circle that Chloe is a woman who plays with others’ affections.”
“Rumors are just rumors,” I said quietly. “We were close growing up, but we were never together. She isn’t the person those stories make her out to be.”
Amelia’s POV:
His words sounded definitive, like he was drawing a clear line, but I could still hear him defending Chloe.
Liam was famously gentle and fair-minded in our circles. Even though I hadn’t known him long, it was clear he wasn’t the type to speak up for another woman in front of his fiancée.
Yet, that was exactly what he did. No matter how well he tried to hide it, a woman’s intuition was sharp. Others might not have noticed, but I felt it instantly, especially after what Eleanor had told me about their history.

“Liam,” I said, finally unable to hold back, “did you choose this place for my birthday specifically to provoke her? Am I just a pawn in some game between you two?”

There was no doubt that Liam was an excellent prospect for marriage. Moon-Shadowed Pack’s influence was strong, and an alliance would greatly benefit my family’s business and my own career. Plus, in Maritime City’s elite werewolf society, Liam had the best reputation. His looks and demeanor could even rival those of male celebrities. Logically, maybe I could have quietly accepted that he had a past.
But I’d always had high standards for a mate. And Chloe was reportedly an ill-mannered adopted daughter with a questionable private life. I just couldn’t understand why Liam would still be hung up on someone like that.
“Ms. Marshall, you’re mistaken.” Liam’s voice turned cold. “I don’t treat relationships as lightly as you seem to think. I can’t control what outsiders say, but you can choose whether or not to believe them. I chose the Grayclaw Pack’s entertainment center for your birthday because it was on your wish list. I had no idea we’d run into her today. If this bothers you, or if you wish to call off our engagement because of it, you have my full respect.”
