I wanted to argue with Liam, but his cold, logical tone made me swallow my frustration. Our relationship wasn’t that deep, and Liam certainly wasn’t desperate to keep me. At least he had made his position clear. I thought it over during the entire ride, and by the time we arrived, I had convinced myself to let it go.

“Liam, I really like you,” I said, lowering my stance. “I’m willing to take our time, build our relationship, and make this work. I just hope you’ll keep your word and not betray my trust.” Secretly, I hoped he would offer me some reassurance in return.

Liam, as expected, responded to this approach. His expression softened noticeably. “Okay. I will. Happy birthday.”

“Thank you,” I smiled.

Hearing his promise improved my mood. I reached out for a hug, but Liam only gave me a polite, brief embrace. Our bodies barely touched before we separated.

The moment Liam’s car drove away, the warmth vanished from my face. I turned and strode quickly into my villa’s courtyard. A werewolf attendant, with typical deference, took my handbag.

“Has the item I ordered arrived?” I asked, my voice devoid of all warmth.

“Yes, Ms. Marshall. The delivery person is waiting for you to sign for it, as you requested,” the butler replied with a bow.

I smirked and walked straight into the brightly lit main hall. The crystal chandelier bathed the house in a rich glow. There, standing by the window, was Chloe, still in her server uniform. Next to her were two giant, limited-edition plush toys, nearly as tall as her.

The Grayclaw Pack’s entertainment center offered a range of services, including custom doll orders. I had placed a last-minute order for these expensive limited editions, specifically demanding that Chloe deliver them to my home personally. Grayclaw Pack’s rules stated that high-value items required the client’s personal inspection upon delivery. Since Chloe was responsible, she had to wait for me to return.

Seeing her, all the irritation simmering inside me-fueled by Liam’s distant behavior-finally found its target. Did she think I hadn’t noticed those subtle glances she threw Liam’s way at my party? A werewolf’s senses were far sharper than she could possibly imagine.

She saw me and immediately approached with the delivery receipt, all business. “Ms. Marshall, your order has been delivered. Please inspect the items and sign here,” she said.

“Ms. Chloe Kelly,” I said slowly, a smirk playing on my lips as I finally took a good look at her. “You’ve gone to so much trouble.”

She appeared calm, but I could scent a sliver of anxiety and wavering pheromones she was desperately trying to conceal. She was a low-ranking werewolf, likely not even a Beta. What made her so special to Liam?

Chloe’s POV:

I was surprised Amelia knew my full name. Did Liam tell her everything? I had seen from the window that Liam drove her home. It was so carly. I thought Eleanor was just trying to mess with me, making me wait for hours until the party ended.

I never expected Amelia to return this quickly to handle the delivery herself. Well, if Liam wanted revenge, it was not far-fetched that his fiancée would help him. There was no way Amelia rushed back from her own birthday party just because she was eager to get these toys.

“This is my job. If you’re satisfied, Ms. Marshall, please sign,” I spoke again when she didn’t take the paperwork.

Amelia glanced at the expensive dolls, paced around them once, then ordered the butler standing nearby, “Go. Bring me the ‘Blaze Roar!”

That was a potent liquor specially supplied to werewolf clans. It was intensely stimulating for werewolves, and I was allergic to alcohol on top of that.

Amelia’s POV:

“Ms. Marshall…” Chloe stated, seeming like she wanted to say something.

I cut her off, my gaze holding the natural dominance of an Alpha female, “I’m not one for beating around the bush, Chloe. I don’t care to dig into your past with Liam, but today, I am very, very unhappy.”

“If this is about Liam, it’s unnecessary. There’s nothing between us. You’re misunderstanding,” she said, her face expressionless and her voice even. But the slight curl of her fingertips betrayed her nerves.

I laughed, the sound dripping with mockery, “I haven’t even accused you of anything yet, Ms. Chloe Kelly. Isn’t explaining yourself a sign of a guilty conscience?”
