Chapter 240 Pay Them Back!
Chloe’s POV:

The sound of the cold water running soon came from inside. I breathed a sigh of relief, then felt a little amused. Liam hadn’t changed-still adorably naive in some ways.
I changed into a loose nightgown that hid my figure. When Liam came out, he only had a towel wrapped around his waist. Water dripped down his firm, toned muscles. His body had changed a lot over the past two years. He was no longer lean and bookish.
Now he was strong and broad, with the powerful build of a werewolf. Even with his gentle manners, he felt overwhelming to be around. Without his glasses, his wet hair fell near the corners of his deep-set eyes, giving him a rare, sharp kind of allure.
I looked away, feeling uneasy.
“Now, tell me what you did,” he said. His tone was urgent and unyielding.
I had never responded well to pressure. I turned and lay down on the sofa. “None of your business. Just go back home. Your dad is so worried that he’s about to work with Penelope. From what I see, neither Penelope nor Samuel is a person you want to be involved with. You should stay away.”
“I’ll call him,” he said, taking out his phone.
Before he could dial, I handed him mine. “Use mine.”
He thanked me and took it into the next room.
Matthew’s POV:
At the top-floor conference room of the Scott Group headquarters, I sat at the head of the long table.
An urgent tax report was laid out in front of me, and it needed Natalie to sign it. Before she left, Natalie had temporarily given me some of her authority. But I knew this report had been tampered with by Penelope’s people.
If I signed on her behalf, all responsibility would fall on Natalie. It was enough to land her with a serious charge, maybe even get her permanently banned from werewolf business courts.
I thought of the trust Natalie had placed in me before leaving. I felt torn.

Chloe had told me to wait three days. She promised she’d find a way to get Liam out of trouble. But Penelope moved faster. As soon as Natalie left, Penelope was already moving to wipe her out.
The conference room was dead silent. Penelope’s representative sat across from me, watching my every move.
“The project can’t be delayed,” a person said calmly. “Please sign for Ms. Anderson now.” Their voice held clear pressure.
I looked up. Just as I was about to remove the pen cap, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
Chloe’s name showed on the screen. My eyes flickered. I raised my hand in the room. “Excuse me. I need to take this,” I said.
I walked to the window and answered. Liam’s low, clear voice came on the line. “Dad, it’s me.”
My fingers tightened around the phone, but I kept my voice steady. “Liam? Are you all right?”
He said, “I’m fine. I’ll be back tomorrow night. But you… I heard you went to Mrs. Penelope Scott for help?”
“It’s a long story,” I said, glancing back. This wasn’t the place to talk.
Liam understood and said, “Don’t do anything, Dad. You always said those from Moon- Shadowed Pack don’t accept threats. We don’t drag the innocent into our problems.”
I hesitated. “I’m not worried about me. But you…”
“Same here,” Liam said firmly. He had that stubborn pride of a werewolf. “I don’t want you involved. And I don’t want the Scott family or anyone else to be put in danger because of me.”
His words hit me like a shot of courage. They steadied my worried mind. Right, when did I start hesitating so much? When I was younger, I was just like him. I’d rather face danger head- on than surrender my dignity.
We were on the same page. After hanging up, I returned to the table and pushed the document
forward.
I stated, “Ms. Anderson hasn’t seen this report. I’ll need to review it first before signing.”
The person across from me turned grim. “If the launch is delayed because of this review, you know what the consequences will be.”
“I know the consequences better than you,” I said, standing up. My gaze swept across the room

with the decisiveness of a pack leader. “I’ll handle it quickly. Any fallout will be on me. Meeting adjourned.”
Liam’s POV:
I handed the phone back to Chloe. “Thanks for telling me all this. Otherwise, Moon-Shadowed Pack could have been in real trouble.”
“Always Moon-Shadowed Pack…” Chloe rolled her eyes. “When will you start thinking about yourself? Do you know who was behind what happened this time?”
As always, she was both annoyed and helpless with how I put others first.
“The Marshall family? Amelia?” I asked quietly.
“Yes. Amelia. You offended her. But Penelope got back at her for you. The Marshall family has their own problems now. When you go back, don’t let her off easy. Show her that Moon- Shadowed Pack and you aren’t to be messed with.” Chloe sounded almost pleased saying it.
I said, “I did embarrass her. So her revenge isn’t exactly unreasonable.”
“Stop with the ‘reasonable’ talk!” Her voice shot up. “No matter the reason, if someone hurts you, you should be angry. You should resent them and pay them back! That’s how werewolves survive!”
There it was again. Every time we talked about this, she went straight into lecture mode.
“If that’s the rule,” I said, looking straight at her, “then the first person I should go after is you, isn’t it?”
Chloe froze. She stared at me, wide-eyed, looking both speechless and furious.
