Just as I was restlessly clenching my hands, a familiar female voice broke the tense silence. “Liam!”

I turned around, almost thinking I was seeing things. “Chloe?” I asked.

She was being escorted in. Seeing me, she hurried over and quickly looked me up and down. I was still in my shirt and suit, outwardly tidy, but the days of interrogation and stress had taken their toll. I looked worn out, with dark circles under my eyes from lack of proper sleep.

“I’m okay.” I stared at her in disbelief for a few seconds, frowning. “But you… How did you…”

“Not now. Let’s go.” She looped her arm through mine, her fingers squeezing my arm firmly. I could feel a thin layer of sweat on her palm. “Remember, we’re mates now. You’re my bonded mate,” she said.

“Bonded mate?” I blinked, my gaze sharpening slightly. There was no hint of a joke in Chloe’s

tone.

“Yes.” Maybe my answer felt too flat, so I added, “Not just these few days. I’ve missed you all along.” It was the truth, even if I had to wrap it in a lie right now.

Chloe’s expression softened visibly for a moment, smiling, “Me, too.”

I lowered my head, my gaze drifting from her forehead to the depths of her eyes. She looked just as I remembered. It had been so long since we were this close, yet it felt like just yesterday. Pent-up feelings surged from deep inside, and my instincts almost took over.

In the hotel room, I carefully checked every corner for hidden cameras or bugs, then locked the door.

“Barring any surprises, we can head home tomorrow evening. But until then, we have to maintain the ‘bonded mate’ act.” I cleared my throat. Saying it out loud, even I felt like I was taking advantage of Liam. But there was no other way.

Liam grabbed my arm, his gaze sharp. “What’s going on?” His eyes held the pressure of a high- ranking werewolf, even though he was holding back his aura.

I said, “Don’t worry about it. I reached an agreement with some higher-ups in Mervia. They agreed to my terms, but I just lied about our relationship. So you just need to play the part of my mate here.”

“What did you trade?” Liam’s brow furrowed, his Alpha instincts fully alert. Negotiating with Mervia’s werewolf leadership had to involve something significant. What did I have to trade? He was obviously worried I’d made an irreversible concession.

“None of your business. It’s personal. Consider it my repayment of a favor. After this, we’re even.” I tried to push him away, but he didn’t budge. In the struggle, we lost our balance and fell onto the bed, one after the other.
