Just then, Sofia’s name flashed on my phone. My expression darkened instantly, and I hit decline.

Sofia was calling me now, and it was almost certainly about Aaliyah. She was Aaliyah’s best friend. Over all the years I was with Aaliyah, every little argument we had would send Aaliyah running to her. Sofia always took her side, delivering moral lectures and accusations in that gentle yet unyielding tone of hers.

Sofia didn’t press the issue. When I didn’t answer, she didn’t call again.

But then, a message popped up in my old college dorm group chat, inviting me to dinner tonight.

Since Natalie had exposed my scandal with Aaliyah, I’d left almost all my alumni group chats.

The only ones I hadn’t quit were a couple of gaming chat groups with guys from neighboring dorms.

This particular group chat was dead silent most of the time. I’d almost forgotten it existed.

Andrew Young sent a message, “Hey, Landon, you free for dinner tonight? I got married and want to treat everyone.” He had lived in the dorm opposite mine in college. I was about to just leave the group chat, but he texted me privately, sending a wedding photo.

He texted, “Landon, remember? My wife, Eliana, used to be Natalie’s classmate. Back then, I kept pestering Natalie to set me up, and she introduced me to Eliana. It didn’t work out in college, but we both ended up working for the same company overseas later. Our fate just fell into place.”

My finger froze on the screen.

I did remember. Not long after Natalie and I got together, Andrew was always bugging her to introduce him to her friends. Natalie was one of the campus belles, and he was convinced all her friends would be,

too.

Natalie had a study buddy for lectures back then-Eliana Helmer, Natalie didn’t have many friends, and Eliana was one of them. During a class event, Natalie introduced Eliana and Andrew. Nothing seemed to come of it back then, and I forgot all about it.

Fate? I scoffed silently. Sure, everything in life came down to fate. Some of it was good fortune. Other kinds were just cursed.

Andrew and Eliana had just returned to the country. They likely hadn’t heard about my scandal with Aaliyah. Or maybe they were pretending they hadn’t.

But he was enthusiastically inviting both Natalie and me to the dinner, saying Eliana really wanted to see Natalie. That probably meant they didn’t know.

“Sure. Send me the address,” I typed, deleting my initial refusal before hitting send.

One evening at the Scott Group, I was downstairs outside the office, smoking and thinking, when I spotted Lily. She had changed into an eye-catching outfit and was hurrying out the main doors, getting into a private car.

I stared for a few seconds, then stubbed out my cigarette and checked my watch. It wasn’t even quitting time yet. Where was she going?

Even from a distance, I could see that her clothes were a lot more revealing than her usual conservative style.

A date?

So her innocent little thing act was just that—an act? Was there a wild nature underneath?

My mood had been in the gutter lately.

Natalie kept getting the better of me, Penelope gave me the cold shoulder and no longer trusted me with important things, and I was becoming irrelevant at the company.
