Chapter 287 Protect Her
Leonardo’s POV:
(29)
Finished
For Victoria, I felt responsibility, care, and a commitment to take care of her for life. My feelings had always been calm and stagnant-steady, uneventful, never so much as a flicker of change.
Then I met Natalie, and that quiet stillness was shattered. For the first time, those long- dormant emotions stirred to life, awakened by a jolt I’d never known before. It was attraction, impulse, a hard-to-control desire and possessiveness, a fierce passion that made me want to pull her into my very
bones.
When I lost Victoria, along with the pain, there was a strange sense of relief-I was finally free from that crushing weight of duty, where gratitude and love had gotten all mixed up.
As for Landon, my people had already “taken care of” him. He and every “friend” he brought tonight would learn exactly what it costs to covet my mate. The Silver-Maned Pack never bared its fangs lightly-but when it did, bloodshed was inevitable.
Victoria… that name was indeed complicated. It stood for a debt, a kindness, a responsibility I once thought was mine. That past taught me the difference between gratitude and love.
But the past was the past. Shadows might linger in dreams, but my waking thoughts and my future belonged entirely to the woman in my arms-Natalie.
She was the one I chose willingly, my soul-bonded mate, the companion I finally found after long, lonely years as an Alpha.
No one would take her from me. No one would hurt her. That included the occasional, nightmare-induced ripple about the past that might surface in my own mind.
I would watch over her and protect her, and I would keep a firm grip on myself, giving her all the security and love she deserved.
Anna’s POV:
The phone’s shrill ring tore me from sleep at 3 in the morning. I was so angry I almost threw the thing across the room. But when I heard Landon was in the hospital, all my grogginess vanished.
I pulled a grumbling James out of bed. He kept muttering, “What a hassle,” but we still rushed to the emergency department as fast as we could.
Several people were in the ER, all banged up and getting patched up. Landon was the worst. He had a gash on the back of his head that needed stitches, a minor concussion, bruises and cuts

The other injured guys started coming out of the treatment rooms, complaining about their bad luck and offering Landon half-hearted, fake-sounding sympathy.
The classmate who organized the dinner and his mate came out last. The woman looked strange. She avoided my eyes and shot Landon a look of pure disdain.
I was confused until I heard their “comforting” words.
A man said, “Landon, feelings are complicated. Don’t take what outsiders say to heart.”
Another echoed, “Exactly, everyone makes mistakes. Even heroes have their weaknesses when it comes to love. You just have… a big heart.
“I could tell you really cared about Natalie. You treated her well all those years. If she’s going to be this cruel now, you should really try to move on.”
From these broken pieces, I put the truth together. This was because of Natalie again! Landon went looking for her, got publicly humiliated by her at the bar, and then got the crap beaten out of him for no reason!
