Miranda covered her mouth, unable to believe Ryan had actually hit me.

As I held my face, dizzy, I saw a terrifying red light flare in his eyes. That wasn’t a figure of speech. His eyes literally changed in that moment-shifting into the vertical pupils of a werewolf, visible when emotions run high. Deep within them, a network of red veins spread, glowing with a frightening light.

He shot to his feet, moving so fast he knocked over the heavy wooden chair with a jarring crash. The aura around him completely transformed. It was no longer suppressed silence, but a volatile force ready to explode.

Fiona’s focus was entirely on me. She obviously sensed Leonardo’s transformation, too, her face ashen. She tried to shield me and guide me back to the bedroom, but I shook my head firmly and pulled my hand free. I couldn’t leave.
