“Don’t talk like that,” she said, turning in my arms to face me. She wrapped her arms around my waist and pressed her check against my chest. “We don’t need to pay these people any more mind from now on. I just need you safe and sound, so we can live our lives well.”
I had grown used to being indifferent to my own pain, but when it came to what was important. to me-especially her-my reactions were instinctive and fierce.
But now I had her. She calmed my temper and chased away the darkness in my heart. With her by my side, the time I spent in darkness and loneliness grew shorter.
“Okay,” I murmured, lowering my head to nuzzle the warm skin of her neck and earlobe, breathing deeply her calming scent. “Whatever you say.”
Her concern for me softened the indifference I’d long used as a shield, turning it to gentleness.
Outside the window, the sky grew dark as a drizzling rain fell. But holding her, feeling the steady rhythm of her breath and heartbeat against me, I felt a sense of perfect fulfillment.
Landon’s POV:
I arrived at the hospital late that night. Anna and James were standing outside the hospital room. Anna’s eyes were red and swollen, clearly from crying.
James stood off to the side, looking sullen. “Go in and see your grandmother,” he said when he saw me, patting my shoulder.
Anna rushed over, sobbing too hard to speak. “Landon… Grandma…” Before she could finish, I shoved the hospital room door open.
The sight inside made my heart ache sharply. My grandmother lay deathly still in the bed, connected to tubes and monitoring machines. A nurse was wiping her thin arm.
My mother sat quietly by the bed, her back stiff and straight, but her pheromones carried heavy, suppressed grief and exhaustion. Bodyguards stood stiffly by the door. A doctor was speaking in low tones, but stopped when I burst in.
My mother looked up calmly. Seeing that it was me, she gave the doctor a slight nod. The doctor turned to leave, but I immediately blocked his path, my throat tight. “Grandma… she’ll be okay, right?” My voice trembled.
The doctor avoided my gaze and sighed heavily, “My condolences.” With that, he sidestepped me and left the room.

My condolences?
The words hit me like a punch to the gut. I staggered back a step, leaning against the cold wall to keep from collapsing. The blood drained from my face.
When Anna had called, she said our grandma had been given a critical diagnosis. I hadn’t wanted to believe it.
Just yesterday, she had been right in front of me, so full of life. How could she be like this today?
How could someone deteriorate so much in just one day?
Grace waved for the nurse and bodyguards to leave. The door closed, leaving only the three of us and the monotonous beep of the machines in the room. She turned to me. “Landon, come talk to your grandmother.” Her voice was unusually calm and steady, but it sent a chill to my
core.
It took me a long moment to drag my heavy legs to the bedside. My knees buckled, and I slumped heavily onto the cold floor. “Grandma…” I croaked, my throat dry and tight. My eyes burned fiercely, but no tears would come.
She was unconscious now, her breathing so faint it was almost imperceptible. She looked terribly old and unfamiliar.
As I leaned closer, that faint smell of decay I’d barely noticed before became clearer. It was the smell of fading life, of a failing body.
“Louisa doesn’t have much time,” Grace said, her voice very low. She spoke with her head bowed, wiping the corner of her eye.
Her relationship with Louisa had never been harmonious-two strong female werewolves, one the former lady of the pack, one the current, constantly clashing. But the sorrow in her pheromones now was genuine. “Arrangements are being made. You should stay here with her from now on.”
“Why?” I finally found my voice, though it came out as a ragged rasp. “She was fine yesterday.”
I remembered returning to Richardson Villa yesterday. Grandma had come to see me, yelling about how useless I was, being played by two women, how I’d shamed the Alpha of the Thorn Pack. Her aura might have dimmed with age, but her spirit had still been fierce. I had pretended to be asleep in bed, but her scolding had been loud and forceful. How could such vitality wither overnight?
“It was Natalie. She went to see Natalie today,” Grace said coldly. “By the time I got the call, Louisa was already on her way to the nearest hospital.”
