I slumped over the lab desk, staring at yet another failed set of data. A cold, heavy weight of disappointment settled in my chest. I really didn’t have my mother’s gift. I knew the procedures by heart, yet the results always fell just short. I hadn’t even completed one-tenth of my internship goals.

Outside the window, the lights of the skyscrapers went out one by one, leaving only my lamp burning. The sense of failure was about to overwhelm me completely. Maybe… I really didn’t belong in this world of elite werewolves.

My phone vibrated, Liam’s name lighting up the screen. I answered, but his voice came through both the receiver and from behind me. “Just getting off?”

“Liam.” I turned around immediately, hanging up, a little surprised. “How did you…”

He stood not far away, in a well-tailored suit, his familiar glasses on his nose. His eyes behind the lenses looked especially deep in the lamplight. He carried a faint scent of alcohol, mixed with the calm, powerful aura of a high-ranking werewolf and a hint of fatigue.

“It’s late. I’ll give you a ride,” he said simply, turning and gesturing for me to follow.

“How did you know I was still at the office?” I asked curiously once we were in the car.

“Next time, maybe don’t post about working late on social media,” Liam said. “Then I probably wouldn’t know.”

He reminded me-I’d just posted a sighing emoji on my feed earlier.

Sitting in his car, the warmth shut out the cold outside. He handed me a cup of hot chocolate and a box of snacks. Salty pretzels-my favorite. The moment I bit into one, the familiar taste made me pause. It tasted a lot like the ones from that snack store near our old university, the place Liam and I used to go.

I asked, “Where are these from? They’re so good… just like the ones from that store near campus.” But that place was far from here. Liam couldn’t have gone there just for these, could he?

“The hotel.” He said calmly, eyes on the road, “I thought they tasted familiar, too, so I brought

some.”

I ate slowly, finishing the bite before speaking, “Thank you for remembering I like these.”

I glanced at Chloe. She was carefully holding the snack, afraid of dropping crumbs in my car.

Seeing her so careful, so… well-behaved, aroused a jumble of emotions in me. The old Chloe and “well-behaved” never went together.

Back then, no matter what I did, I’d be lucky to get a “thank you.”

Today, when she saw me off at the Scott Group, she kept saying those two words over and over.

I asked her if she realized I was helping my own sister. Shouldn’t I be thanking her? She didn’t even process it.

I’d just smiled lightly at the time. Thinking back now, the little troublemaker from back then was now oozing insecurity.

I said seriously, “You did well today. Sometimes our positions mean we can’t just lash out at people, but… I think it’s more satisfying when you can just say what you want, like you used to.”

Chloe’s POV:

Liam’s sudden, seemingly random comment caught me off guard. I didn’t reply.

Liam was very observant. He was probably just trying to comfort me.

Earlier today, Liam thanked me for helping him. Honestly, I didn’t feel I’d done much to be thanked for-I was more worried I’d almost messed things up again. Dealing with Samuel, all I could do was stand my ground. I couldn’t think of any clever tactics.

But the way Liam stepped in today, handling Samuel… he was incredibly impressive. He looked calm, assertive, completely in control-like a true Alpha leader who commanded everything.

And me? I was just cornered, only able to snarl uselessly in defiance.

At the Scott Group, from Natalie to Liam, even Lily-they were all so much more capable than

I was.

Liam’s POV:

When we reached the Kelly Villa, I intended to watch Chloe go inside before leaving. But I saw someone at the front door, seemingly waiting for her.

She was pulled, almost dragged, inside.

Feeling uneasy, I called Chloe-no answer.

Without hesitating, I got out and rang the doorbell.
