Taking advantage of a quiet moment, Lillian went downstairs to the secure medical suite arranged her grandma. The room hummed with state-of-the-art machinery, all perfectly calibrated to maintain the elderly woman's vital signs.
Lillian walked over, sat gently by the edge of the bed, and took her frail hand in hers.
"Grandma, I ran into Beatrice at the airport today.
"Your best friend, Beatrice. She's back in the country. I'm not sure how long she's staying this time, but I know she'll be coming to visit you very soon.
"Grandma, you've been resting for so long. It's time to wake up.
"Do you have any idea how much I miss you?
"I have so much good news to share with you.
"Lillionix is thriving. And today, Leonard's parents flew all the way to Northwyn specifically to finalize our engagement.
"You have to wake up soon, Grandma. You have to be there for my engagement party.
"I chose the right man this time, and I need you there to witness it with your own eyes."
As she spoke, tears welled up in Lillian's eyes, threatening to spill over.
Just then, Mr. Peregrine walked into the room.
"Ms. Mercer, you're here."
Lillian hastily brushed away the tears forming at the corners of her eyes.
But nothing escaped Mr. Peregrine's sharp gaze.
"Your grandmother's condition is highly stable, and she is making steady progress. There's no need for you to worry so much. What has you choked up today?"
Lillian gently touched the emerald bangle on her wrist. "I'm not sad. I just desperately want her to wake up so she can share in my happiness."
