Ever since she had blocked the Mercer family, Sebastian, and everyone else, Lillian often received calls from unknown numbers like this.
Worried the constant ringing would wake her mother, and fearing they would just call back if she hung up, she decided to answer.
As expected, she heard Brandon’s voice on the other end.
“Lillian, don’t hang up. I have something important to discuss with you.”
Lillian covered the receiver with her hand, stepped out of her mother’s room, and gently closed the door. Only then did she put the phone back to her ear. “It’s very late. I hope this ‘important matter’ is actually important.”
On the other end of the line, Brandon could clearly hear the impatience in Lillian’s voice.
She was always like this. He was her older brother, yet she never gave him the respect he deserved. Her tone was always so sharp.
“Find some time to come back home. Dad wants to file for divorce from Mom. As you know, with Mom’s current condition, she can’t handle the proceedings herself.”
So it was an important matter after all. She should probably be glad she hadn’t missed this important call.
Otherwise, she might never have known it had happened until it was already done.
“I understand.”
With those two simple words, she said no more and hung up the phone.
It seemed she really would have to make a trip back home tomorrow.
—
The next day, at the Mercer family home.
As Lillian entered the villa, she sensed a strange new atmosphere.
It seemed much less... Bella Ward-ish than before.
Once inside, Lillian realized that Sabrina and her daughter seemed to have moved out.
No wonder Martin was suddenly talking about divorce.
It seemed this was the aftermath of the recent gala.
Sabrina and her daughter had indeed lost a great deal of face that day, which must be why they moved out.
And because they had moved out, Martin was getting antsy. He was in a hurry to get divorced so he could officially marry Sabrina.
“So, everyone’s here.”
Her father and brothers were all present. Knowing she was coming today, it seemed they had all been waiting for her.
Lillian had taken time off from work to be there. She had no desire to come, but it was clear they wouldn't have proceeded without her.
“Lillian, I told you about the situation last night.”
“I know,” Lillian said. “But it doesn’t seem like I have much say in the affairs of this family, do I?”
“As long as you understand that,” Martin said.
Lillian’s expression hardened slightly. “In that case, why did you ask me to come back?”
Brandon immediately walked over, took her by the arm, and guided her to a seat on the sofa.
Just then, a maid brought over a fruit platter.
Colin placed the platter in front of Lillian, making it easy for her to reach.
The platter was filled with several kinds of fruit, all cut and arranged, and all her favorites.
She cleared her throat and mimicked her grandmother’s voice. “Martin, you’ll let that whore in this house over my dead body.”
The use of his first name, combined with the word “whore,” spoken in the old woman’s tone from Lillian’s mouth, sent Martin into a rage. He shot up from his seat, ready to strike her.
“You wicked child! You are a wicked child...”
Brandon quickly intervened. “Dad, Dad, don’t get excited, please don’t be angry...” He then whispered something in a low voice that Lillian couldn’t quite hear.
In any case, Martin managed to control his temper. He didn’t continue shouting, but the look he gave her was venomous.
That was not the look of a father at his daughter.
Even a tiger, they say, won’t eat its own cubs.
Brandon turned back to Lillian. “Lillian, will you be happy if you push Dad to his breaking point? He’s your father!”
Lillian wanted to say, “I don’t have a father like that.”
But she couldn’t shake the feeling that there was no reason for Martin to discuss the divorce with her.
Given Martin’s personality, after waiting all these years to divorce and remarry, he would have just gone ahead and done it.
Why would he suddenly care about his children’s approval?
It was a joke.
He was not the type to be constrained by others.
Why would he consult her on something like this?
Could it be that there was something she didn’t know, some hidden reason behind all this?
