Family on Their Knees Heart Turned to Ice novel Chapter 131

Lillian didn't think for a second that the Mercer family would send money to the prison to have her tortured.

The Mercers were social climbers, opportunistic and superficial, and their concern for her had always missed the mark.

Still, she couldn't imagine them kicking her while she was down after already pushing her into prison.

But something had clearly gone wrong. The money they'd sent had become a tool for someone with a little power to make her life miserable.

Her father and brothers wouldn't have intentionally stepped on her, but just like always, their so-called concern was completely misguided. It had even led to her treatment being delayed.

Suddenly, a violent coughing fit seized Lillian, so severe it forced her to pull the car over.

She stopped on the side of the road, coughing, wheezing, and struggling to breathe. Brandon, flustered, scrambled to find a bottle of water and tissues, patting her back clumsily to help.

"Lillian, what's wrong? What's happening..." Brandon couldn't find the words to describe her condition.

Lillian ignored him, getting back into the car on her own. She retrieved a pill bottle with the label torn off, shook out two pills, and swallowed them with a gulp of water.

Brandon watched her, clearly stunned by the sequence of events.

"Lillian..."

She fastened her seatbelt and started the car again, ignoring his questions and concern.

He continued to babble, "Lillian, what's wrong with you? That was terrifying...

Lillian, why aren't you saying anything?

What was that medicine you just took? The bottle doesn't even have a name on it...

Lillian, are you sick?

What is it?"

Finally fed up, Lillian turned and glared at him, shouting, "Will you shut up? It's asthma triggered by a cold. I took my asthma medication. Is that okay with you?"

Brandon fell silent. In his memory, Lillian had always been sweet, obedient, and sensible. She had changed since her release, but he'd never seen her this fierce. He was taken aback.

After pulling into a spot in the airport parking garage, Lillian saw that her timing was perfect.

Inside the first-class cabin, Brandon noticed there were no other passengers and looked around curiously.

Lillian said, "Don't bother looking. I bought all the seats in first class. Brandon, let's talk about Mom."

It dawned on him then that she had booked out the entire cabin just to speak with him in private.

It seemed that, aside from the flight to Midvale, there really was no other time for them to sit down and have a quiet conversation.

But Brandon's first reaction was, "Lillian, where did you get this much money? The money for your company, for that multi-million dollar car, and now booking out the entire first-class cabin for a flight... How do you have so much cash on hand?"

Lillian laughed wryly. "I said, let's talk about Mom."

Brandon sighed in frustration. "Lillian, ever since you got out of prison, I feel like you've been drifting further and further away from our family.

You've changed. You're not the person you used to be.

You don't love this family, and you don't love Dad or us.

And you used to chase after Sebastian like he was the only one in the world. You loved Noah so much it was like you were ready to sacrifice everything for him at any moment.
