Meanwhile, Lucas returned to his own VIP suite. The mattress was leagues better than the cheap one in his dorm. He sank into the plush pillows, his mind swirling with nothing but numbers.
Four hundred million dollars. The thought alone was intoxicating.
He had briefly considered teaming up with Bella, but the risks were too high. The money was in Debbie's account; without Debbie, there was no payout. His only viable option was to stick with the older woman.
Thankfully, Debbie had brought the Family Registry with her, and it was currently stashed in the Northwyn Airport Storage Lockers. With the passcode, he could retrieve it, use a power of attorney, and get her a replacement ID. Once they had the ID, the rest would be easy.
Bella would never see it coming.
And indeed, she didn't. Even as Bella tossed and turned that night, agonizing over every possible variable, she never once suspected that Lucas had already switched sides. She was still banking on him finding a way into Debbie's room to extract the bank passwords. She didn't expect Debbie to hand them over easily—the woman was paranoid and wouldn't give up her leverage without seeing the cash first. But Bella felt secure. She held Debbie's phone, bank cards, and ID. Debbie was essentially a hostage, incapable of replacing her documents. All Bella had to do was bide her time.
Once the coast was clear, she would get into the hospital, force the passwords out of Debbie, and split the money. After paying off The Blood-Debt Vultures, Bella calculated she would still have hundreds of millions left—a massive war chest to fight Sebastian in divorce court. She would use his own family's money to destroy him.
But the next morning, before Bella could set her grand plans in motion, reality crashed down on her.
The Mercers were having breakfast when a servant brought in a courier envelope.
Martin snatched the document from Sabrina's hands. His eyes widened. "What is going on? Why is Sebastian suing you for a $300 million share-purchase debt plus interest?"
Three hundred million?
Brandon and Colin exchanged a sharp glance. That number was very familiar.
It was the three hundred million owed to Sebastian, and they both remembered exactly where that debt had come from.
