Her grandmother's condition was improving by the day. When Lillian spoke to her, she could see the older woman's eyes shifting beneath her lids. Though she still couldn't open her eyes or wake up completely, Lillian knew Mr. Peregrine was right—she was slowly emerging from the coma.
Sometimes, she could even feel a faint squeeze when she held her grandmother's hand.
It made her incredibly happy.
Over at the Winthrop estate, the family was equally thrilled when they received the call.
Tristan Winthrop, uncharacteristically excited, rushed to Beatrice. "Grandma, I actually did it! I secured the contract based on pure merit."
Beatrice was overjoyed. "Pouring all our capital into that plant wasn't a waste of money or effort after all. The Winthrop family finally has a chance to rise again."
As she spoke, tears shimmered in her eyes, her emotions running high.
Miles Winthrop chimed in. "I told you, experience beats everything. We really have to rely on Grandma for things like this. After struggling overseas for years and doing nothing but draining the family accounts, we never achieved anything real. Mom and Dad are ridiculous for trying to do things their own way when we have a mastermind like Grandma right here. Look at this—the second Tristan gets his act together and listens to Grandma, he immediately takes off."
Miles's lack of a filter caused Beatrice's expression to darken rapidly.
"Miles, shut your mouth," Beatrice snapped. "What do you mean, 'gets his act together'? I forbid you from using phrasing like that ever again. We're back in the country now. If any rumors start spreading, I'm holding you personally responsible. You know exactly who he's supposed to marry, so you'd better weigh your words carefully. What's more important—the future of this entire family, or your petty jealousy? Furthermore, he is your older brother. No more of these passive-aggressive remarks. If you're so capable, why don't you go out and achieve what he just did?"
Securing the contract with Lillian's company was a massive triumph.
Countless factories had fought for the Lillionix partnership and failed. Reaching this milestone was no small feat for the Winthrops.
Miles mimed zipping his lips shut and stayed quiet.
But internally, he couldn't help but wonder. If someone from their family was truly destined to marry Lillian, why couldn't it be him?
Was Tristan really that exceptional?
Not at all.
