After breakfast, Lillian's dizziness subsided, and she felt fine. She gathered her things and prepared to head to the office.
“Can't you handle your work from home? Do you really have to go to the office?” Leonard asked.
“I’m the CEO of the company. At this stage, my absence would create a lot of problems. I’m the backbone of the team. If the employees only ever see me through remote commands, it will hurt their morale. Don’t worry, I know my body’s limits. I’m fine, really. If I genuinely feel unwell, I’ll be sensible enough to stay home and rest.”
“Alright,” Leonard conceded. He then called out to Ethan, “You’ll be Ms. Mercer’s driver today. Make sure you get her to the company safely and bring her back on time after work.”
“Yes, sir,” Ethan replied.
Lillian felt a bit helpless. If her car weren’t a two-seater, she was sure Leonard would have insisted on escorting her personally.
Still, they were both sick, and she had to admit her lifestyle was far more reckless than his. Leonard was meticulously careful, following his doctor’s orders to the letter, doing everything in his power to survive. Meanwhile, she was driving and working, living each day as if it were her last, desperately trying to achieve her dream before she ran out of time. She was terrified of dying with her dream unfulfilled.
It couldn't be helped; different people had different fates. They were both ill, but Leonard had a business empire he had built from scratch, along with loving parents and family.
As for her, aside from a sliver of past glory, she had, in essence, nothing. Her family wasn't family, her son wasn't her son, and her husband's heart had long since strayed. No... perhaps Sebastian's heart had never changed because he had never loved her in the first place. He had just married her and had a son with her when the timing was convenient.
She had squandered the most precious years of her life, and it was impossible not to feel a pang of regret.
When she arrived at the office, it was livelier than usual. The employees had also attended the Mercer family wedding banquet the day before. However, the venue was so large and their seats were so far back that they couldn't see what was happening at the front. They had to watch the screens, so they were all aware of what Lillian had done.
Today, upon seeing her, they secretly gave her thumbs-ups.
Even Emma couldn't resist gossiping. “Ms. Mercer, you are absolutely legendary.”
Lillian walked toward her office. “Are you referring to me crashing the wedding with my grandmother’s agreement, or me anticipating the corporate espionage?”
Emma was in complete awe. “Both! A lot of people say you started your business with the Mercer family's support and that after offending your stepmother yesterday, you're in for a tough time. But those of us who have been with you from the beginning know the truth.
Back when even Mr. Blake was a nobody, you were the one who brought in all the resources. Without you, there would be no Mr. Blake today. Those resources were definitely not from the Mercer family, so you are the one with the real power.
“Exactly,” Lillian said.
Victor replied to Sebastian. In less than fifteen minutes, ten million dollars was in his account, and he took down the posts. Then, he cheekily ran from his office to Lillian's and transferred five million to her right in front of her.
“Let’s split the profits. Don’t say I never include you. You deserve this money. After all, he’s still technically your husband, so half of it is yours anyway.”
Lillian said, “The divorce agreement I gave him states that I’m leaving with nothing. I don’t want a single penny of his money. But since this five million is from you, thank you.”
Victor was stunned. “Wait, you should take Sebastian’s money, but you refuse. But the money I give you, you accept without a second thought?”
Lillian’s eyes were already fixed on her computer screen, her mind on another topic. “Come take a look at this. If there are no issues, I’m planning to run the data in the next couple of days.”
At the mention of this, Victor became more excited than he had been about receiving ten million dollars. To him, ten million was just a number, no longer particularly thrilling. But the prospect of running the data made his eyes light up.
Following Li, was he about to fulfill another dream?
