Lillian almost laughed at Brandon’s last words.
If she were sick, she should go home and let him take care of her?
That was the most ridiculous thing she’d heard in a long time.
Every single man in the Mercer family was selfish and cold-hearted. They spoke in grand terms about family and loved ones, but in the end, everything they did was for themselves.
She had known what her father and brothers were like for a long time. The problem was that, despite knowing, she had never truly wanted to believe it. Two years in prison, a firsthand experience of their cruelty, had finally made her understand.
That was why she was now cutting ties with them so decisively, taking her grandmother and mother with her.
Her mother and grandmother hadn't just fallen ill yesterday. Wasn't Brandon their family?
Yet in all these years, had he ever truly cared for them? The proof was right in front of her, leaving no room for illusions.
Lillian watched her brother’s retreating back. She felt no disappointment anymore. Having seen them for who they were, she had no expectations, and thus, no disappointment. Without that weight, she sat there calmly.
A maid assigned to her care handed her a bottle of water. “Ms. Mercer, it’s time to rehydrate.”
The medical equipment looked even more advanced than what his grandmother had at the hospital. He hadn’t expected Lillian to set up an upgraded medical suite here, complete with what appeared to be professional nurses.
“Mr. Mercer, I’m Mrs. Mercer’s primary care nurse,” a woman said. “I heard you were coming today, so I rearranged my schedule. If you have any questions about her condition, feel free to ask me.”
Since the nurse had initiated, Brandon asked a couple of questions. “How is my grandmother’s condition? Is there any chance she’ll recover?”
The nurse smiled faintly. “Ms. Mercer has hired the best doctors for her. There is a possibility that she may regain consciousness in the future.”
Brandon nodded. “Her previous doctors said she would probably never wake up. Lillian really does care about Grandma. She was always Grandma’s favorite grandchild. I guess the old lady didn’t spoil her for nothing.”
