“Is that it? You’re blaming us for everything, aren’t you?”
“Brandon, you’re very good at changing the subject,” Lillian said, her voice weary. “Forget it. There’s nothing more to say. Go see Grandma. Someone will show you the way.”
Furious, Brandon stood up as if to leave, but then he remembered why he had come. After taking two steps, he turned around and sat back down.
As he settled, he noticed a distinct weariness on Lillian’s face, the kind of exhaustion that comes with illness. Seeing him sit, however, she forced herself to meet his gaze.
“What, is there something else?”
“Lillian, you don’t look well. What’s wrong? You haven’t been to the office recently, have you?”
He studied her more closely now. Before, when they’d made him disinfect, he thought it was because she disliked him. But looking at her properly, he saw something was truly strange. She looked like she was convalescing.
Lillian found it almost amusing that this man, whose world revolved around big deals and business, could notice such a detail.
“If you have something to say, say it. I don’t need this kind of concern.”
“So you really are sick? Right, I remember now, you collapsed at the office and were taken away by ambulance.
Lillian, what’s wrong with you?
Why do you look so pale and weak? I’m your brother. Tell me the truth.”
“Perhaps I don’t need your concern,” she repeated.
Time is short. You should hurry.”
With Lillian laying it out so plainly, Brandon had no other choice.
“If you’re sick, come home. I’ll take care of you,” he said before leaving the sunroom. He spoke to a maid and was led to see his grandmother.
At first glance, his grandmother looked the same as always. But a closer look would have revealed that her complexion was much healthier than it had been in the hospital.
Brandon, however, didn’t notice these changes. He had rarely visited his comatose grandmother before, and he certainly hadn't paid attention to details like her complexion or condition.
In his eyes, a person in a vegetative state was just a living corpse, and certainly not as important as his business.
