Bella's expression soured. She had never been able to figure out where Lillian got her money.
She was born into a wealthy family, a true heiress, that much was true.
But shouldn't her money have come from the Mercers? And after she got married, shouldn't she have been using Sebastian's money?
If the Mercer family and Sebastian cut her off financially, she should have been like a lost dog.
But the reality was completely different. Not only was she not short on cash, but she was driving a luxury car that Bella couldn't even dream of.
She didn't just have a fancy car; when she wanted to start a company, she just did it.
And it had been a while now, yet the company hadn't gone bankrupt, which also surprised Bella.
She didn't believe that a man like Nathan Cole would be foolish enough to spend that much money on Lillian, especially while she was still married. Even if he was keeping her, it would be for her looks, just to have some fun with her. He would never spend so lavishly.
A multi-million dollar car was not something a kept woman could ever get.
Having grown up with her mother, Bella considered herself an expert on the true nature of men. In all her years, she had never seen a man spend so extravagantly on a woman he was just playing with.
Nathan didn't seem like an idiot.
Besides, Bella had noticed that Nathan and Lillian hadn't been very close lately.
Lillian felt she'd had an unexpectedly rewarding evening. After enjoying the full range of Bella's changing expressions, she muttered, "How boring," turned, and went back to her room.
Bella had occupied her bedroom for two years while she was away, and now she was forced to give it back. That must have stung.
But Lillian didn't care. Seeing those expressions had made it all worthwhile.
"Don't be so smug, Lillian! You're not Mrs. Blake anymore. So what if you can come back to the Mercer house? Do you think this family is the same as it was before?
You'd better watch your step in this house now.
Besides, aren't you seriously ill?
I suggest you stop scheming and start thinking about how you're going to stay alive."
After spitting out her words, Bella turned to walk toward the guest room.
But after just two steps, she saw Brandon Mercer standing at the top of the stairs.
Brandon's face was grim. Bella's heart sank. Had he heard everything?
Brandon went to Lillian's room and saw her about to close the door. He hurried over. "Lillian, are you okay? Don't take what Bella said to heart. Don't feel any pressure. We'll get you the treatment you need, and you don't have to worry about the money.
The family has already hired a doctor and a nurse for you. If you feel even slightly unwell at home, you must call them.
Also…"
Lillian interrupted, "Brandon, you don't think I'm short on money for medical bills, do you? You've been to Halfridge Villas. Do you really think the medical care I have there is worse than here?"
Brandon stammered, "Lillian, that's not what I meant, you know that.
Why did you tell her about the divorce?
Sebastian said he hadn't told anyone. Now that you've let it out, I'm afraid she's going to rush to marry him.
What will you do then?"
Lillian's voice turned cold. "Brandon, are you more concerned about my health, or about my marriage being tied to someone who can help the Mercer family?
If it's the former, my recovery is going okay. I probably won't be dying anytime soon.
If it's the latter, maybe you should try working a little harder yourself. Perhaps then the Mercer family might still have a chance."
