"Fine, Martha. You're really something. Since you're so eager to be the hero, I'll let you. Just you wait. I'm sending you to see your precious miss right now."
With that, Bella called the police.
The police arrived quickly. It was the same group from the previous afternoon. They were exasperated. Yesterday they had come to arrest Lillian, and today they were here to arrest a maid. This family was a real headache.
Bella venomously recounted Martha's "crimes" to the police, claiming that as a servant, she was damaging family property. She escalated the accusation to theft and robbery.
Martha didn't offer a single soft word, stepping forward to take full responsibility. She claimed everyone was acting under her orders and that she would bear all the consequences.
But while the police were there and put Martha in handcuffs, they did nothing to stop the other servants from continuing to dismantle and move the furniture. Bella could only watch as the group of servants efficiently carried everything out of the room.
She tried to stop them, but it was one against many. Not only was she no match for them, but more importantly, they weren't listening to her at all.
As she was being led to the police car, Martha called out, "Find a way to contact Ms. Lillian! Don't leave a single scrap for Bella. I'll take responsibility for this. You just keep moving everything. The police will investigate the truth. Theft, robbery—even if I'm found guilty, I'll be the only one going to jail. They wanted Ms. Lillian to be imprisoned, so I'll go keep her company. Don't be afraid."
However, Ethan felt he couldn't keep this news about the Mercer staff from her. He knocked on the door and found Lillian. "Ms. Mercer, there's something about the Mercer family I need to discuss with you privately."
Lillian was helping Leonard with a glass of water. In truth, Leonard wasn't that weak, but he couldn't resist Lillian's meticulous care, and he was even playing up his weakness to get closer to her. He shot Ethan a sharp glare, but Ethan held his ground, head lowered. A loyal servant like that couldn't be left in trouble.
It was Lillian who spoke. "It's fine, you can just say it. He can hear anything that concerns me."
