Seeing her mother in such a panic, Bella immediately pieced things together.
She looked at Sabrina in disbelief, her voice a furious, hushed whisper. “Mom, don’t tell me you took out a loan from a loan shark?”
Sabrina’s eyes instantly welled up with tears.
In that moment, Bella understood everything.
She clung to one last sliver of hope. “How much?”
Sabrina held up one finger.
Bella breathed a small sigh of relief. “Ten million?” It wasn't an insignificant amount, but it was manageable, she thought. Once she got the money back from Debbie, ten million wouldn't be a problem.
But in the next second, Sabrina shook her head.
Bella’s eyes widened, and she shot up from her seat. “What? Mom, don’t tell me you invested a hundred million?”
And to her horror, Sabrina nodded.
“Don’t you have several hundred million on hand?” Sabrina asked. “Don’t tell me you invested all of it, too?”
“No,” Bella said coldly. The money wasn’t even in her possession, so how could she have invested it?
At that moment, Bella was secretly relieved that she had lent the money to Debbie. She had earned goodwill and interest, and she had also been spared from this financial disaster. If that money had been in her hands, she knew she wouldn't have been able to resist investing all of it.
As she was thinking, Sabrina let out a sigh of relief. “My dear daughter, then you can just use that money to settle my hundred-million-dollar debt, right?”
Bella fell silent. She couldn’t very well tell her mother that not only had she lent all the money to Debbie, but she had even taken out high-interest loans to give Debbie more. What could she do now? She had to suffer in silence and figure out a way to cover the loss.
