Martin sighed again.
Bella, who hadn’t gone to sleep yet, heard Martin arrive and immediately came over.
“Dad, you’re back. How are things at the company?”
Martin said, “Bella, you’re still up this late?”
“I was working. It’s been busy at my company lately, and I can’t afford to let things slip on my projects. How is the Mercer Group doing?”
No matter what rumors she heard outside, nothing was as reliable as hearing it directly from Martin.
“The company’s in a terrible state, which is why I came back to talk it over with your mother. Since you’re here too, Bella, we can discuss it with you as well. We spent the entire day in meetings, and it seems that besides a public apology and taking responsibility, we have no other options. Bella, you’re a good kid. I’m sure you can understand. As for your wedding, I was thinking of talking to Sebastian tonight to try and make sure this doesn’t affect your marriage. What do you think?”
Martin’s tone was incredibly humble; it was clear he was asking for Bella’s permission.
Bella’s heart sank. She had laid out all the reasons against it to the Mercer brothers, but they were still insisting her mother apologize. It seemed they had weighed their options and decided to sacrifice her marriage to save the Mercer Group. In the end, their own core interests were what mattered most.
Since Martin had put it that way, Bella couldn’t really object.
“I’ll call Sebastian. He’s probably still awake. Maybe he can help us figure something out.”
Hearing him address him by name felt somewhat reassuring to Martin.
“Sebastian, I’m glad I’m not bothering you. I’m sure you’re aware of the situation with the Mercer Group. Right now, there aren’t any better solutions. So, we’ve decided to have Sabrina apologize. But she’s your future mother-in-law, and this will inevitably affect the Blake family’s reputation. It took so long for you and Bella to get to this point, and none of us want to see you two separated…”
Sebastian didn’t need to hear the rest; he understood completely. The Mercer family was worried that if Sabrina apologized, it would impact the wedding.
In truth, Sebastian was already having second thoughts. But he had already let Bella start planning the wedding, and many people, especially at his company, knew about it. Bella hadn’t been discreet, and the news had spread like wildfire. If he canceled the wedding now, his own character would be called into question.
So, Sebastian was essentially backed into a corner. With no way out, he could only resign himself to the situation for now.
