Chapter 144

“Really?” I raised an eyebrow, taunting.“Looks like you don’t have much faith in Emily. You don’t even have the courage to confirm her innocence?” My wolf purred with satisfaction at his discomfort; his scent of uncertainty was intoxicating.
That set him off. His anger boiled over. He whipped out his communicator, fingers flying over the screen. “Fine, I’ll show you how innocent Emily is!” His wolf, still fiercely loyal to his sister, was desperate to prove me wrong.
As the banking page loaded, his expression shifted from anger to shock, then to a stark, chilling pallor. The transactions clearly showed Emily transferring the pack’s silver into her personal account. My wolf felt a pang of something akin to pity, but it was quickly overshadowed by her satisfaction.
I stood inside, my expression still cold. But deep down, a hint of loneliness flickered in my eyes–even with easily verifiable evidence, he’d rather suspect me than confront the truth.
My wolf felt a familiar sting of rejection.
Jared froze; his communicator almost slipped from his trembling hand. The scent of his betrayal was almost overwhelming, a bitter contrast to his usually confident scent.
He looked up, regret and disbelief warring in his eyes.“This… this is impossible… Emily’s not short of silver. But you…”
His wolf whimpered, the reality hitting him with brutal force.
I closed my eyes. Even though I no longer expected anything from the Miller brothers, being doubted like this still stung. My wolf snarled at the injustice.
“Impossible?” I scoffed.“Mr. Miller, can’t you see the transactions?”
He looked up, anger flaring briefly. But this quickly turned to confusion and unease. He looked at his communicator again, hoping the numbers would magically change.
“But… we’ve always spoiled her. We give her whatever she wants. Why would she steal such a paltry sum?” His voice grew faint, almost a whisper.
His wolf was desperately grasping at straws.
I crossed my arms; a thoughtful glint in my eyes. My wolf sensed a new direction for this conversation.
Yes, why did Emily need silver? This was worth investigating.
“You spoil her so much, so she must have a reason for everything she does. Why don’t you ask her? Maybe give her some extra silver. She’s so pitiful, living under someone else’s roof, too scared to ask, so she ‘steals‘ instead.” My wolf tasted the delicious irony.
He looked up, glaring at me.
His wolf was wounded but defiant.
I raised an eyebrow, dripping with sarcasm.“Your Emily is so kind; why would she steal? She must have had reasons for borrowing
some silver.”
This stung him; he’d actually thought that way! But hearing it out loud from me was like salt in the wound.
His wolf recoiled.
He gritted his teeth, his expression resolute. “I’ll get to the bottom of this.”

“Suit yourself,” I shrugged. Don’t be naive. You think you know someone, actually you don’t.” My wolf felt a surge of triumph.

He was stunned. Since the last incident, I’d gotten sharper, harsher. He knew they might be wrongly accusing me, but we were family; did it matter that much? Emily wouldn’t be so petty! His wolf was confused and hurt.
He felt a sense of alienation. Was this calm, sharp she–wolf his beloved sister?
‘Isabella, you…” he hesitated.
“If there’s nothing else, please leave, I interrupted. I’m busy.”
My wolf exhaled, content with the outcome. I turned to close the door.
“Wait!” he yelled. I’m sorry; I apologize, come back to the pack. His wolf’s desperate plea was almost audible.
