Chapter 167
“Bang! The heavy oak door to Jared’s den burst open.
Alexander, his alpha presence radiating a chilling frost, stormed in, his powerful frame collapsing onto the rough–hewn sofa
He stared at the rough–hewn ceiling beams, the flickering firelight casting long, menacing shadows across his face. My wolf snarled low in my chest, sensing the danger.
His scent, usually sharp and musky, was thick with barely contained fury.
“Isabella is ruthless; she even scammed you,” Alexander sneered, his voice dripping with icy sarcasm.
His wolf growled a challenge, a low rumble in the air.
Jared didn’t respond; his fingers flew across the ancient rune–inscribed tablet, the rhythmic scratch of his stylus echoing in the cavernous space. Occasionally, he’d use his mind–link, sending short, urgent commands, then severing the connection with a sharp mental snap.
Alexander produced a dried sprig of Nightshade, but didn’t crush it. Instead, he sniffed it deeply, his nostrils flaring, like a wolf tracking prey.
My wolf bristled.
His desperation was palpable, a scent that overlay the normal alpha dominance.
“Honestly, we should just seize Isabella!”
Jared froze mid–scribe, his head snapping up, his dark eyes narrowing.
My wolf felt a surge of primal fear, mixed with a confusing mixture of pity and resentment.
Alexander’s gaze turned glacial, like a winter storm.“Seize her, force her to retract her claims, and bring Emily home!*
“Seizure?” Jared finally stopped, whirling around, a deep frown etching itself onto his brow. “Alexander, you’re mad! That’s against the ancient–wolf–laws!”
“Wolf–laws?” Alexander laughed, his harsh sound echoing through the den, making the very stones tremble. So what? To save Emily, I’d give my life! Besides, I’m her brother–do you really think the Pack Council would condemn me?”
His wolf’s arrogance was overwhelming.
“Alexander!” Jared’s voice was sharp, laced with alarm.
My wolf whined, sensing the impending doom..
“Relax, you don’t need to do anything,” Alexander saw Jared’s hesitation, smirking coldly. “I’ll arrange it; just wait for Emily’s return.” With that, he turned and headed for the exit. At the threshold, he paused, looking back at Jared with a warning glint in his eyes.“Jared, don’t interfere; or I can’t guarantee Isabella’s safety.”
After Alexander left, Jared immediately set off for Smith’s territory, his anxiety a palpable thing, a thick fog clouding his senses. Outside the imposing stone structure, Jared paced restlessly, his agitation radiating off him in waves. He attempted to enter, but was immediately confronted by the guardians, powerful warriors guarding the perimeter.
“Release me! I need to see Isabella!” He struggled, his strength formidable, his voice low and furious.

His scent shifted, becoming almost desperate.
His desperation, while disturbing, stirred a flicker of something within me, a memory of our past bond.
His body was thrown to the ground; he saw my face at an upper window, a brief glimpse between the heavy drapes.
Seeing me, a spark of hope ignited in his eyes, mirrored by a twitch in my wolf’s tail.
But I stood there, my gaze cold and emotionless, the distance between us unbridgeable. His hope, his expectation, were instantly shattered, leaving only despair.
He broke free from the guardians and bellowed upwards.
“Isabella! Listen! Alexander’s lost his mind–he’s planning to seize you! Beware!”
I remained impassive, watching silently before letting the heavy drapes fall.
My wolf felt nothing but a chilling sense of isolation.

Jared’s heart felt as though it was being ripped apart by claws, a searing pain that mirrored the cold despair in my eyes. I was no longer the she–wolf who trusted him completely! I didn’t believe him!
His betrayal stung, deeper than any physical pain.
His heart constricted painfully, as if gripped by an invisible hand, stealing his breath.
The scent of my rejection was a bitter poison.
“Isabella! You have to trust me! You know how Old Five is when he rages–he’ll truly hurt you!” He howled at the closed window, his voice raw with anguish.
His desperate plea did nothing to soften the ice around my heart.
