Andrew and Alexander didn’t see the disgust simmering beneath Emily’s carefully constructed facade. They saw only a caring sister, a stark contrast to me. Fools, my wolf thought. They don’t see her game.*
“This isn’t the place to discuss this. Let’s return to the longhouse,” Emily said, her voice smooth.
The three of them left the exile grounds, each lost in their thoughts.
Back at the Miller longhouse, Emily took charge, directing the household staff.“Emma, prepare hot water for Alexander.
Prepare a cleansing fire to dispel any lingering negative energy.” She turned to another servant.“Cora, tell the cook to prepare some of Alexander’s favorite meals. Keep it light, he hasn’t eaten properly for days.”
The servants scurried to obey. Emily turned to Alexander, concern etched on her face.“Alexander, bathe and change. I’ll make you some
broth.”
Alexander felt a warmth bloom in his chest.“Emily, thank you,” he said, his voice hoarse.
After his bath, he looked refreshed, but his clothes hung loose on his thin frame, a stark testament to his ordeal. *He’s vulnerable,* my
wolf noted.
Andrew’s anger towards me intensified. “Emily, when you and Isabella challenge each other, you *must* win! Teach her a lesson!”
Emily’s lips tightened, and under Andrew’s gaze, she reluctantly nodded.
*She’s pretending compliance again, my wolf snarled.
Andrew frowned, sensing her lack of conviction. He was about to scold her when his comm–stone rang.
“There’s an emergency at Fire Ridge. I have to go!” he said, leaving hurriedly.
The moment he left, the fragile façade shattered. Gloom clouded Emily’s features. She bit her lip, drawing blood. “She’s not as strong as she lets on, I observed. And her wolf is feeling betrayed.*
Alexander, unaware of Emily’s previous attempts at self–harm, was immediately concerned. “Emily, what’s wrong? You look terrible.” Tears streamed down her face. She covered her face, sobbing softly.“I didn’t mean to… I really didn’t mean to…‘
She wiped her tears, revealing several shocking scars on her wrist–evidence of previous attempts at self–harm.
She’s using this to play the victim, my wolf growled.
Alexander’s expression hardened. He saw a fresh scar.“What happened? Who did this?”
Emily’s face contorted in pain. She shook her head, crying.“Alexander, I… I can’t design anymore… I’ve lost my inspiration…”
*It’s a lie, my wolf hissed. But it’s one that Alexander will believe.*
Alexander remembered how I had previously damaged Emily’s designs and the incident where she fell ill after an encounter with me. *He’ll use this to further his hatred, I thought, a cold dread settling in my wolf’s heart.
