Chapter 222
How could I…?
A sharp, jarring mental image slammed into Emily’s mind–a flash of white phosphorus!
My wolf snarled, a low growl rumbling in my chest.
Could it be that Alexander’s use of white phosphorus this time triggered a memory–a connection to the fire three years ago?
That incompetent fool! But that was three years ago… Even if a memory surfaced, it couldn’t possibly lead back to *her*!
Still, watching Alexander dragged away by the Silvermoon Pack’s enforcers, a wave of icy dread washed over Emily.
Panic seized her; could she be exposed too?
Her fear intensified, her body weakening until her vision blurred, and she collapsed, unconscious.
“Emily!” Andrew, witnessing Alexander’s arrest, rushed over, only to find Emily sprawled on the ground. He caught her as she fell.“Emily! Emily, wake up! What’s wrong?”
This time, it was genuine shock that felled her. She lay limp in Andrew’s arms, a broken thing.
“Isabella! What did you say to her? Do you know Emily can’t handle this kind of emotional upheaval!” Andrew’s wolf bared its teeth, a growl vibrating in his chest.
I offered a cold smile.“Perhaps it was her deepest fear.” My wolf felt a surge of satisfaction.
Andrew whirled around, his gaze burning into mine.“If anything happens to Emily, I will never forgive you!”
With that, Andrew carried Emily to his waiting car and rushed her to the Healer’s den.
Only after Alexander was gone and Andrew had departed with Emily did the tremor finally hit me.
I stared at the still–smoldering villa, the flames refusing to die completely.
It was like reliving that night, that fire that changed everything. The terror of the flames, the despair, the helplessness – they engulfed me once more. My body trembled violently; my breath came in ragged gasps!
Grayson, who’d been watching from the shadows, sensed my shift. He moved swiftly, enveloping me in his embrace. “Isabella, don’t be afraid, I’m here,” he whispered, holding me close.“It’s over. You’re safe now.”
I clung to Grayson’s fur, as if to a lifeline. I looked up at the flickering flames, their cold glow illuminating Grayson’s grim profile. My eyes widened, hazy memories blurring with his face.“Grayson,” I whispered, “I’m scared…”
Before I could finish, darkness claimed me; my strength ebbed, and I sank down. Grayson reacted instantly, his arms tightening around me. He looked down at my pale, still form, his dark eyes filled with a chilling frost. He scooped me into his arms and carried me towards his waiting vehicle.
Gently placing me in the back, he took the driver’s seat, started the engine, and checked on me in the rearview mirror. His lips were pressed into a thin line. He pulled out his communicator and dialed a number, his voice devoid of warmth.“Tonight, I want Alexander brought before me.”
Later, I lay in the Healer’s den, pale–faced and restless in my sleep, brows furrowed.
Grayson sat by my bedside, his hand gently holding mine.
