Her parting words, “Who’s actually making things difficult for whom,” struck a nerve, planting seeds of doubt among those present.
Emily seemed pitiable, but I was always the one to bear the blame.
My wolf felt a simmering resentment.
The injustice of it all gnawed at me.
“If there’s nothing else, just move aside. I’m going to hunt; I still have classes this afternoon,” I stated, deliberately ignoring their whispering.
My voice, though calm, held a steel edge.
The scent of my irritation was sharp enough for them to understand my impatience.
I stepped around them, making my exit.
“Hey, Isabella, the pack has training this afternoon.
Don’t forget to cover my class and take notes,” Emily said, her tone soft but carrying an unmistakable air of authority.
Her words were laced with the subtle scent of the Alpha status.
A Beta pretend to be an Alpha by virtue of the favored position in the Miller family? Interesting.
“Whose class is it? Attend your own training; I’ve got my own classes to attend,” I retorted, my wolf bristling at her presumption.
Emily’s lackey exploded, her scent sharp with anger, “Did you not hear that Emily has training? It’s just a class, taking attendance–how hard can that be?
Can’t you even manage that? No wonder your grades are in the gutter!”
“And by the way, you used to handle this stuff. Now you just decide to bail? That’s pretty low!”
Her words were sharp claws, raking across my dignity.
My wolf snarled.
I turned to face them, my patience wearing thin.
“First off, it’s a student’s duty to attend their classes; she should go herself.
Secondly, this isn’t even my class.
Helping out once is a favor, not an obligation.
You can’t guilt–trip me into this!”
My tone was clipped, icy.
My poor grades were a direct consequence of constantly covering for Emily, neglecting my own studies; despite acing any tests I managed to take, I was barely scraping by.
After making my point, ignoring their continued sniping, I headed towards the cave entrance.
My wolf urged me to leave, shaking off their poisonous words.

< Chapter 23
Suddenly, a commotion erupted outside.
The scent of many wolves shifted, a mix of curiosity and something else… excitement?
In the hallway, a tall, striking figure approached, backlit by the sun filtering through the cave mouth.
He wore a simple white tunic, a cloak draped over his arm, his sleeves rolled up, revealing strong forearms.
He looked cool and clean
Sunlight illuminated his handsome profile, drawing countless admiring gazes.
His scent was strong musky, and utterly captivating-
My wolf whimpered, recognizing the potent Alpha scent, unfamiliar yet strangely familiar.
“Wow, who is that?
‘So handsome! Is he a visitor from another pack?”
Look, he’s carrying a hunting pouch! Is he bringing a gift to his mate?”
