His heart felt like it was submerged in ice water, growing cold and hard. My wolf felt the shift in his scent, the sudden chill replacing, the earlier turmoil. His wolf was wounded, but not by physical injury.

He looked at Emily, and the pity he once felt was gone, replaced by a near–numb coldness. His wolf had seen through the deception, the carefully crafted performance.

“It’s best that way.” Jared’s voice was flat and emotionless as he dropped those four words.

He couldn’t even be bothered to look at her again, turning on his heel and striding away. His wolf’s rejection was absolute.

Emily watched his indifferent back, suddenly lifting her head. Her face was still streaked with tears, but deep in her eyes, resentment and hatred brewed. She had gone to such lengths to be humble, and he remained so unmoved!

Her wolf snarled, the mask of vulnerability gone.

As Jared reached the door to Alpha Caleb’s hospital room, he suddenly stopped. He had to tell me about this! My scent–the sweet, comforting scent of my pheromones–haunted him.

He still held the broth he had brought for Alpha Caleb, ready to go in, when he caught sight of two figures in the corridor by the lift–it

We seemed to be preparing to leave, wearing a relaxed smile that Jared had never seen on my face before.

That smile stung Jared’s eyes!

His wolf was consumed by jealousy and a desperate need to prevent me from leaving. But remembering Emily’s plan, he didn’t hesitate. He didn’t even check on Alpha Caleb, shoving the thermos into the bodyguard’s hands.

“Take it.” He only dropped those two words, not waiting for the bodyguard to respond, and bolted out like an arrow.

He didn’t wait for the lift but dashed straight to the emergency stairwell.

His footsteps echoed in the empty stairwell, thudding and hurried, just like his racing heart! instinct and a desperate need for my attention.

He rushed down the stairs, nearly bursting through the emergency exit door.

Then he burst out of the hospital lobby, immediately spotting a Cullinan about to leave.

“Isabella!” Jared shouted, running towards us, stopping in front of the car. He’d run in front of the car; even with Alpha Grayson’s quick reaction, the car hit Jared’s knee.

Thankfully, the car had just started moving, so it wasn’t going fast. He stumbled back, pain shooting through his knee, twisting his

expression.

His wolf’s desperation overrode any concern for his own well–being.

But he couldn’t care about that; he hurriedly pushed himself up.

He was afraid I would leave, pressing against the car’s front, slowly making his way to the passenger seat, one hand pulling the door, the other knocking on the window, wanting me to roll it down because he had something to say.
