Chapter396.
My nolf ears perked up at the Howlnet threads discussing the Emily’s Scholarship Fund.
Initially, the comments seemed unremarkable. But after Alexander, that arrogant pup, attempted to control the Silvermoon Pack Council
orum, the Howlnet thread devolved into chaos.
Why bother applying? Smith Group’s bounty covers my pup–rearing expenses.”
Exactly!”
Her condescending attitude… You know what I mean.”
“She acts all high and mighty, but she can’t stand criticism. Does she really think we’re blind to her manipulation of the comments?”
Those words hit me like a lightning strike.
They saw through Alexander’s pathetic attempt! My carefully crafted reputation was crumbling
The North Pack pups had already received bounties from Grayson for information – my meager donations seemed laughable in comparison. My vision blurred. Rage flooded me, transforming my form slightly; my claws itched to unsheathe.
The carefully crafted image I’d built was in shambles.
It was all Alexander’s stupid idea!
My fingers trembled as I typed a furious message blasting Alexander’s plan, then slammed the send button.
A cold wave of self–preservation washed over me.
I couldn’t let my image shatter in front of Alexander; only Andrew and he remained in my corner.
I frantically retracted the message. My heart hammered.
He checked his messages constantly.
I quickly sent a replacement:“It’s nothing.”
I stared at my communicator, waiting. Alexander had a special Howl for my messages. He was busy, but when he finally checked, the message was gone, replaced by “This message was retracted,” followed by “It’s nothing.”
His wolf must have sensed something was amiss.
He called.
I composed myself, choking back genuine grief and resentment.
“Alexander…”
“What is it, Emily?” His voice was urgent.“What happened? Is there something you can’t tell me?”
I played the role of the heartbroken she–wolf, sobbing and recounting the forum incident.
“Alexander… they found out the Pack Council forum was controlled. They’re insulting me on the Howlnet…” I recounted how the North Pack pups had turned on me.
My fury burned beneath the surface.
Hearing my sobs, his wolf must have felt the pain.“I’m sorry, Emily. It’s my fault. My plan wasn’t thorough enough, and you got hurt.” “It’s not your fault, Alexander…” I kept up my innocent facade.
“Emily, are you at the den?”
“Yes.” I answered, confused.
“Then open the door.”
Open the door? Had he sent something?
Pretending to sob, I reached for the doorknob.
Click–The door opened.
Alexander stood there, dusty from his travels. I froze.
My carefully constructed facade crumbled. He thought I was happily surprised. He pulled me into a hug.
“It’s okay, Emily, I’m back.”
This wasn’t a surprise; it was a shock! My acting was ruined. There were no tears on my face! My wolf howled silently in panic.
I buried my face in his chest, frantically rubbing my eyes until they burned, forcing tears.
He felt protective. He whispered,
“Don’t cry, Emily.”
