Grayson regarded Julia, his eyes hardening.
His wolf snarled, its displeasure palpable.
“Depart.”
His voice was low, yet chilling.
Julia’s smile widened, as if amused.
“Grayson, what nonsense? I’ve just relocated; I cannot leave so readily.”
Grayson’s face darkened; the air around them grew frigid.
He advanced, his paw a blur, seizing Julia’s slender neck.
His grip was firm.
Julia’s face flushed, then turned purple from lack of air.
“I’ll repeat myself, depart.”
Julia, nearly suffocating, her eyes blazing with a frightening intensity and a hint of exhilaration, managed to force out the words, one by one.
“Huh… huh… I won’t.”
Her laughter was manic, her gaze locked onto his.
“Don’t you think she will be frightened?”
Grayson paused, remembering my presence! The chilling aura emanating from him, capable of freezing a wolf solid, dissipated.
He released Julia and turned to me.
A flicker of panic crossed his eyes.
His wolf was acutely aware of his brutal display.
He feared he’d frightened me, that I had witnessed this vicious side.
But I watched quietly, my expression unreadable.
I had experienced betrayal and near–death; I knew everyone possessed a hidden side.
I had long suspected Grayson’s darker nature.
My wolf observed, unfazed.
Besides…
I met Grayson’s gaze and spoke clearly.

“Why should I be afraid? My brother’s fierceness is always directed at outsiders.
Never at me.
Why would I fear?”
Grayson stared at me deeply, the hardness in his gaze slowly softening.
His wolf felt the calming effect of words.
my
I stepped forward, approaching Grayson’s side.
I reached out and gently tugged his sleeve.
“I am famished.” My voice was soft, a soothing balm to Grayson’s taut nerves.
“Let us return for dinner.”
The last vestiges of ice in Grayson’s eyes melted completely.
The oppressive aura vanished, replaced by his usual gentleness.
“Agreed.” He responded, his voice unconsciously softening.
“What do
you desire?”
I tilted my head, considering.
“Lobsters.”
“Agreed.”
We spoke as if alone, as if the near–violent confrontation hadn’t occurred.
Side by side, we walked through the gate of our den.
The heavy door swung shut, blocking out the outside world.
Julia remained rooted, her face a storm cloud.
She glared venomously at the spot where I’d vanished, her claws digging into her paws.
Grayson’s warning meant nothing.
With me present, Grayson wouldn’t harm her.
Because he feared my rejection!
She intended to remain, to provoke him.
My claim of not being afraid? It merely meant I hadn’t seen Grayson truly lose control! Once I witnessed Grayson’s true nature–the ruthlessness, the cruelty, the unbridled madness–1, a delicate she–wolf, would be terrified, utterly shattered.
Then, I would leave Grayson, and he would be hers alone.
