Chapter 620.
Faye stood beside me, her light–slate clutched in her hand, a grave look on her Beta face.
“Isabella,” she said, Julia’s ‘Starlight Project‘ is getting a huge reaction on the Howlnet.”
“Right now, the whole pack–network is practically canonizing her, calling her a beautiful, kind–hearted saint,” I muttered, the irony heavy in my voic My wolf let out a cynical snort in my mind. She could smell the rot beneath the saintly facade.“And of course, the Green family’s pack influence and trade–value is soaring right along with her newfound halo.”
Faye scrolled through the screen, showing me the latest data.
The most crucial thing is that their Voyager Healing Guild, under the guise of pack welfare, launched a so–called ‘free health check–up‘ service. Appointments are already booked three moons out.”
‘With them reaching out to ordinary wolves on such a massive scale, I suspect they might have discovered the secret that micro–runes can control people…”
Even Faye seemed puzzled, wondering why I had so directly used the spirit–sentinels to influence Old Alpha Miller. She clearly thought we could ha simply woken him up, dragged it out for a few days, and then let the Old Alpha grow suspicious of Julia. And once the Patriarch woke up, everything would fall into place.
My lips curved into a sarcastic smile. “To let them dig their own grave and bury themselves.”
Faye looked puzzled.
They think they’ve opened a magic box that will allow them to control the wolf territories, but that box is named Pandora, and it’s toxic.” After I said that, my attention completely shifted to the giant healing pod in front of me. To me, Julia and Aurora’s unsavory tactics were like summer gnats-annoying in their buzzing, but nothing more. I could swat them away with a single hand.
Right now, absolutely nothing else mattered more than the wolf inside that healing pod.
On the screen, all the vital signs were steadily converging toward perfect, stable readings. ‘Beep-”
The soft sound shattered the anxious quiet of the lab. On the healing pod’s display screen, all the data points turned a healthy, vibrant converging into a single, steady straight line.
Perfect.
Click…
green, finally
heard a click as the mechanical lock disengaged. The translucent hatch slowly hissed open, rising upwards through a cloud of cool, white mist.
immediately scrambled down from the control panel, hurrying to his side, and clasped Grayson’s hand. I felt Grayson’s long fingers twitch, a eather–light brush against my palm.
Then, slowly, he opened his eyes. His deep amber eyes, still hazy with sleep, found mine, focusing on my face. His lips were dry, and his voice was a raw asp, like sandpaper against skin.
Isabella.”
The moment those two words left his lips, I lost all control. Tears sprang to my eyes. I threw myself into Grayson’s arms, holding on tight. My wolf let out a long, joyous howl of relief within my spirit. As I held his body, feeling his familiar Alpha scent–mountain air and cedar–his warmth, and the teady, powerful thump of his Blood–Core against my chest, a sliver of reality finally settled in.
You scared me to death…”
[ buried
my face in the crook of his neck, my voice thick with tears and choked with a heavy sniffle.
Grayson’s body was still a little stiff, but he managed to lift his hand, gently patting my back, a steady rhythm meant to soothe.
‘Shh, darling, don’t cry,” he whispered, his voice still a little weak but firm. “See? I’m right here. I’m okay.”
He leaned down, brushing his lips against my cheek, kissing away my tears.
“You may not trust yourself, Isabella,” he said, his eyes finding mine with intense heat, but I trust you.” My hand trembled slightly. I had absolutely no confidence! But thank the Moon, he was recovering!
< Chapter 620.
Faye had already slipped out without a sound, leaving us to ourselves.
Half an hour later.
Grayson had changed into a clean set of loungewear and was now sitting on the sofa, letting me conduct his final physical function checks.
“Okay, grip this,” I handed him a spirit–grip strength tester.
Grayson’s lips quirked. He didn’t take the device, but instead, his hand closed around my slender wrist.
“How about we test this?”
His palm was warm and strong, completely unlike a wolf who’d been unconscious for nearly half a month. My cheeks flushed, and I shot him a quick glare.
“Cut it out. Let’s be serious.”
“I am serious.” Grayson’s face was perfectly straight, yet his hand showed no sign of letting go.“I want you to feel it firsthand. Numbers don’t really tell the whole story, do they?”
Even with his playful banter, he still cooperated and completed all the tests. The results showed his physical functions were even better than before the illness, by a significant margin. And I knew it was all thanks to my tireless, sleepless watch over him, and the micro–runes that had relentlessly repaired and nourished his muscles and nerves from within.
“Okay, that’s it. No problems at all,” I packed away the instruments, a wave of profound relief washing over me.
“See? I told you I was perfectly fine,” Grayson said with a laugh, pulling me into his arms.
Just then, Faye knocked and walked in. The moment she saw Grayson and me holding each other close, she immediately turned her back.
‘T’ll come back in a moment…” Faye started, but as soon as she walked in, I quickly disentangled myself from Grayson’s embrace, settling properly in my chair before calling out,“Wait.”
What is it?”
Faye froze at the sound of my voice, a subtle rustle of clothes the only sound before she finally turned around. Only then did she turn to face us, ready
to report.
‘Isabella, we’ve hit a snag with the site selection for Fire Apothecary’s branch office. Several plots of land we’d been eyeing in the Northern Territory, which the pack–elders had previously agreed to sell us, all backed out at the last minute when it came time to sign the blood–contracts.”
I knew immediately this was a direct attack. Julia and Aurora were trying to prevent Fire Apothecary from establishing a foothold in the central pack territory, cutting us off at the source. What’s more, a chilling thought struck me: this could be Julia testing the micro–runes‘ ability to control the minds of the landowners.
My brow furrowed slightly.
Grayson, however, simply smiled. He gently patted my hand and said softly, “I can handle the rest of my rehab on my own. You have things to do, so go ahead and get to work.”
