I locked eyes with Jared, my she–wolf flinching.
I quickly looked away, unable to bear the intensity of his gaze.
His anger flared, a hot, volatile energy that filled the air like the scent of burning pine after a lightning strike.
He’d only asked me to apologize to Emily! Leaving the Silvermoon Pack was one thing, calling him “Alpha Miller” another, but that look I gave him… did I truly find him that repugnant?
His wolf growled low in his chest, but the need to find the drone operator, a rogue device that had somehow breached our pack’s security, momentarily quelled his fury.
Still, the thought lingered;
the operation had a subtle elegance, a precision, that felt… familiar.
He dismissed it instantly; my skills were considerable, but not *that* refined.
The operator had to be someone else.
Just then, Grayson intercepted him.
“Alpha Miller, searching for the drone operator?” Grayson’s playful smirk was almost irritating.
His dark eyes gleamed with mischief.
“You can stop.
You won’t find them.”
Jared frowned, his wolf bristling.
He despised Grayson’s infuriatingly calm demeanor.
Grayson’s grin widened, unfazed by Jared’s wolfish glare.
He winked at me, the playful glint in his eyes a stark contrast to Jared’s simmering anger.
“Right?”
The operator was right in front of him, and yet he almost left.
I lowered my head, a shy smile playing on my lips.
The unspoken connection between us only fueled Jared’s irritation.
He pointed an accusatory finger at Grayson, his voice a low growl.
“You make it sound like the operator is one of *your* wolves.
You don’t even have a drone team! Stop pretending!”
Grayson chuckled, his gaze softening as it landed on me.

“If my luna likes it, then we can have a drone team.”
His warmth enveloped me, a comforting feeling completely foreign after a decade of neglect.
All their affection had been lavished on Emily.
Jared’s wolf snarled, the sight of my smile triggering a sharp pang in his chest.
It had been an eternity since I’d smiled at him like that.
His scoff was laced with disdain.
“Isabella, you’re easily swayed; a few sweet words are enough.”
My smile froze.
My lips pressed together, my expression stiffening.
A cold wave washed over me, chilling my very core.
Grayson sensed the shift in my mood.
A flicker of danger ignited in his dark eyes, his gaze sharp, piercing Jared’s.

“If she’s so easily swayed, isn’t that proof some are too stingy to offer kind words, yet still dare to criticize Isabella?”
His words struck Jared like a cold dagger.
He stammered, anger and shame warring within him.
“I’m only saying this for her own good! I’m trying to help her; sometimes the truth hurts!”
Grayson chuckled, his eyes filled with mockery.
“Help?
What you call helping is just taming and controlling her!”
In my past life, they had used the guise of “help” to wound me, belittle me, making me feel inferior, obedient, lost, sacrificing myself until my death.
I stood quietly, my gaze calm, but a dull ache throbbed in my chest.
My wolf whimpered, a silent echo of past pain.
